Pionyr Immunotherapeutics Inc. is a growing immuno-oncology company based in South San Francisco focused on novel approaches to cancer immunotherapy.  We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated candidate for a full-time Sr. Research Associate or Associate Scientist position who has expertise in IHC, biomarker development, as well as hands on experience with standard immunology and immune-oncology in vitro assays.  The candidate will help establish the tissue profiling and image analysis lab at Pionyr, play an integral role in advancing our therapeutic candidates into the clinic, and support target and translational discovery efforts.

Specific Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):


  • Histology work, including tissue processing, embedding, and sectioning
  • Staining tissues with different methods including H&E, special stains, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunofluorescence (IF), and In Situ Hybridization (ISH)
  • Multiplex staining with different markers, imaging, and analyzing/scoring tissue sections, including Tissue Microarrays (TMAs)
  • Troubleshooting and optimizing IHC assays through data interpretation, identification of novel or alternate procedures and antigen retrieval techniques
  • Knowledge of immuno-oncology biomarkers and the tumor microenvironment is a plus
  • Performing in vitro and ex vivo immunology-focused assays, such as cell subset isolation, immunophenotyping and immune function assays (multi-parameter flow cytometry, ADCC and ADCP functional assays, cell signaling and reporter assays, ELISA etc.) 
  • Organizing and analyzing results, communicating and presenting findings in team and company meetings, and contributing to scientific publications
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced dynamic environment while delivering high quality work


  • Bachelors or Masters in Immunology, Cancer Biology, Histotechnology, or a related field, with a minimum 5 years of relevant experience in an industrial or academic lab setting
  • Experience in routine histology work, including tissue processing, embedding, and sectioning
  • Experience in staining methods, such as H&E, Immunohistochemistry (dual color and multiplex is highly desirable), Immunofluorescence, and In Situ Hybridization
  • Experience in using and maintaining different histology and imaging equipment including the microtome, light and fluorescent microscopes (High-throughput slide scanner highly desirable)
  • Experience in using imaging software to analyze and quantify images
  • Experience in standard immunological techniques including flow cytometry, Western Blots, ELISAs, ADCC/ADCP bioassays
  • Experience with standard cell culture techniques, isolating and working with primary, blood- or tissue-derived cells, cell-based assays, RNA extraction and qPCR, molecular cloning
  • Ability to organize and maintain data and tissue collection inventory
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to collaborate in a team setting
