General Position Summary/Purpose:

We are seeking a Senior Discovery Operation Expert with experience in the daily operations that will support, manage and facilitate activities in the Discovery wet lab that support the activities of Biology, Chemistry, DMPK and Translational Medicine departments. The candidate will be working closely with senior staff members and accountable for the successful operational planning, building infrastructure to maximize efficiency and productivity of lab staff as well as execution and handling of lab needs, including but not limited to: optimal conditioning/maintenance of lab equipment/instruments, developing and maintaining various sample banks, compound handling including S&R, storage automation, banking, distribution, procurement activities, take in-charge of centralized equipment monitoring system (REES), assist during new employee on-boarding, capital budget, developing software/hardware connections to facilitate lab operations.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Primarily responsible for operation-related activities that support entire Discovery department
  • Actively manage project team behaviors, mediates team disputes, and facilitate establishment of healthy and high performing teams. Identifies and develops process improvement, initiatives and reviews recommendations with management for approval and sponsorship
  • Automation of compound management, including preparation of DMSO stock solutions for in-house/CRO/Collaborators synthesized compounds and their short/long term storage, Distribution/Tracking upon request from various departments to ensure on-time delivery to support their research work
  • Work closely with GCLO and GTC department team leads at Abbvie HQ and create a compatible work-flow to meet global standard related to sample processing (small molecules, cell-lines, reagents and chemicals) including domestic and international S&H.
  • Responsible for guiding scientists during assay automation development, and coordinate various in vitro assay and chemistry activities
  • Inventory control and ordering of laboratory supplies and reagents - receipt and delivery of incoming packages, checking for expired reagents, following up on orders, etc. Good communication with staff and external vendors is essential
  • Oversee placing orders daily in procurement system (Microsoft AX - Process Expert), working with end-users and procurement to define processes that will improve efficiency and ensure orders are placed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ensure point-of-use areas/common stock is maintained with required inventory levels. Record keeping of bio-samples and small molecule compounds, capital equipment, maintenance records, etc.
  • Work closely with facility department in scheduling lab equipment maintenance including de-frosting deep freezers (-80*C and -20*C) and calibration. Prioritize tasks and assignments to maximize efficiency and productivity
  • Respond to new requests with appropriate urgency in an organized approach. Show motivation to learn new things in the lab and work with team leads to automate the compound tracking system and should be willing to take additional responsibilities, if needed
  • Be an advocate for lab safety and work with EHS team to ensure all bio-hazard and chemical waste are removed and disposed properly.
  • Interface between vendors, IT, field scientists to facilitate effectiveness in the labs.
  • Ensure proper functioning of computers interfaced with lab instruments and their routine backup functions are enabled. Make IT requests to put all the computers on network and prepare a log book for all lab equipment
  • Own and keep track of lab supplies and instrument budget assigned to the various departments comes under Discovery.
  • Work with in-house IT professionals to design and create an internal "Discovery Department" webpage connecting all 4 departments and provide clickable links to key resource points
  • Lead work with legal, procurement team to efficiently execute capital equipment ordering, maintenance and other research services
  • Actively participate and take responsibility in new lab design and infrastructure development as well as co-ordinate with all scientists effectively to ensure smooth transition in to new lab spaces during relocation of our existing facility.
  • Identify and work closely with procurement department team leads in purchasing key scientific equipment to advance discovery research activities

Qualifications/Experience/Education Requirements:

  • A BS/MS or equivalent degree in chemistry and/or biological sciences with at least 8 to 12 years working full time in a laboratory setting either in an academia or industry
  • Extensive experience in robotics, operating/programming various liquid handlers to facilitate compound management as well as supporting bio-assay development is highly desirable
  • Managing a group consisting of 3-5 team members who are part of Discovery Operation Department is essential
  • Good knowledge of various computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel) including purchasing process system (Microsoft Dynamics AX and Apttus) and creating databases is a must .
  • Demonstrate competency and have a collaborative drive to work with peers, partners, and others, including individuals outside of the team and functional area, to positively impact business performance and optimize the input of those involved.
  • Strong people and organizational skills is a must.
  • Past proven effectiveness in lab operations
  • Outstanding knowledge of overall drug development process relevant to pharmaceutical and/or biotech organizations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with staff and key stakeholders and should have good conflict management skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way.
  • Strong influence and negotiation skills.
  • Results and detail-oriented; self-motivated.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of best-practice alliance/collaboration management principles and concepts, techniques and tools.
  • Experience in contract man agement with CROs, collaborators, a big plus.
