The EHS Program is responsible for environmental protection, occupational safety and health, protective services, and emergency preparedness programs at Frederick National Laboratory of Cancer Research


The Associate Safety Officer will be responsible for:
  • Establishing, monitoring, and enforcing laser and other safety controls, as well as evaluating laser and other safety hazards
  • Performing various radiation safety job functions as a member of the NCI-F Radiation Safety Office
  • Monitoring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, standards, licenses, and codes to include, but limited to: OSHA, NRC, DOT, DOE FDA, EPA, and MDE
  • Inspecting facilities and work-sites, making written reports of findings, and conducting follow-up inspections
  • Administering hazard control programs appropriate to a safety discipline (e.g., laser safety, radiation safety)
  • Investigating reports of incidents and making formal reports of findings
  • Managing emergency response efforts as appropriate to the safety office

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) appropriate to safety management (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of experience in safety and environmental compliance, preferably at a biomedical research facility or an institution of higher education
  • Strong technical knowledge of health and safety regulations / standards
  • Experience performing health and safety evaluations
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft office software systems, training modalities, and other computer software systems to complement and improve upon existing safety software systems
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

  • Experience in laser safety and radiation safety disciplines
  • Safety and Health experience in a laboratory/research setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff
  • Strong computer database development skills
