The Global Protein Sciences (GPS) Group is seeking a highly motivated leader to head the Purification Group at AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA. As leader of an experienced and talented group, the candidate will guide and provide mentorship as well as attract expertise to the team toward achieving excellence in native protein purifications, recombinant expression of proteins, isolating membrane proteins using synthetic model membrane systems (nanodisc) and purifying novel fusion protein formats. The candidate will have an understanding of technologies for generating difficult antigens and proprietary biotherapeutics as well as a deep understanding of how to keep proteins stable and active. As head of the purification group the candidate is expected to work in cross-functional teams with scientists from GPS, across different functions and therapeutic areas (Immunology, Oncology and Neuroscience) and with the Biologics Generation Group in Worcester to advance the pipeline. The successful candidate must have good verbal and written skills and the ability to clearly present scientific concepts and results for functional scientific and non-scientific leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively demonstrate leadership by advising and sharing knowledge and expert opinions with subordinates, peers, and senior management
  • Strategically advance scientific expertise within the purification group by motivating scientists to innovate, develop, optimize, and scale-up purifications
  • Design and purify both soluble and membrane protein targets with enhanced stability enabling functional studies and antibody discovery
  • Develop and improve efficiencies and communication across groups
  • Work efficiently, collaboratively, and across functions to meet timelines and goals
  • Lead cross-functional project team
  • Write and review technical publications, reports and presentations
  • Mentor and inspire staff to publish and present externally

  • BS, MS or PhD with a strong foundation in biochemistry, protein purification, structural biology, and at least 16+ (BS), 14+ (MS) or 8+ (PhD) years of post-graduate experience preferably in an industry setting
  • Significant research experience as demonstrated by a track record of publications, presentations and scientific accomplishments
  • Experience with expression and purification from various host expression systems.
  • Strong communication skills including verbal, written, and scientific data presentation
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary discovery team setting
