Data Systems Analyst


The BIDS Strategic and Data Science Initiatives Group has been established to undertake key initiatives and establish new collaborations in computing and data science to address cancer challenges and accelerate cancer research. A key focus of this group is to provide a secure and robust data management environment for scientific data in accordance with FAIR data principles supporting an increasing level of analysis for the ever-expanding collection of scientific datasets.

We are seeking a Data Systems Analyst for a newly created full-time position that offers a great opportunity to solve the data science challenges faced by scientists working at the cutting edge of cancer research. This is a highly visible position supporting users of our data management environment and enterprise data services.


Data Systems Analyst

Identify and define system requirements and features, and work to develop solutions for stakeholder issues

Work closely with user groups to assist with metadata and data hierarchy definitions

Train stakeholders on the use of the data management environment and enterprise data services

Provide technical support for on-boarding users to the Data Management environment. Perform user configurations and develop custom scripts for metadata extraction/data transfer as required

Perform verification and validation of feature releases and patch fixes for the Data Services API

Keep abreast of emerging trends and advances in data and metadata management


Possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.

In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of experience, with 1 year in a client facing role.

Experience with data management systems handling large datasets

Familiarity with object storage technologies e.g. Amazon S3, Cleversafe or others

Experience with Linux

Experience using one or more programming or scripting languages

Familiarity with data interchange formats e.g. JSON, XML.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Possession of a Master's degree

Experience with scientific datasets e.g. next-gen sequencing, imaging, etc.

Familiarity with cloud technologies

Familiarity with test automation frameworks e.g. selenium

Working knowledge of REST APIs

Familiarity with version control systems such as GitHub or subversion
