General Position Summary/Purpose:

We seek a highly motivated and experienced senior scientific leader to spearhead pharmacodynamic and diagnostic biomarker development efforts in support of Pharmacyclics Translational Medicine pipeline in early development. Substantial expertise in signaling pathways and/or immuno-oncology is highly desirable. Working closely with colleagues in Discovery and Clinical departments, the incumbent will be accountable for efforts focusing on, but not limited to, pharmacodynamic /predictive biomarkers discovery, clinical implementation, clinical execution from pre-IND to Ph1/2 trials, along with building deep biological knowledge of relevant diseases through interrogating human specimens. The successful candidate would also be expected to be the subject expert on both target and disease biology in Clinical team, to contribute to clinical trial design in early development and integrate effective clinical biomarker strategy for a given therapeutic molecule, while representing Translational Medicine early development interfacing with various functions in AbbVie organization to ensure successful progression of pipeline molecules.

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate intimately with research biologists, to amplify value of translational science, to participate and contribute to team meetings, to publish in high quality scientific, technical or medical journals, present at internal/external meetings and drive novel innovative technological and scientific strategies.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional scientific leadership and mastery of early development biomarker expertise to peers in Translational Medicine and project teams
  • Lead and/or mentor one or more Translational Medicine subteams that includes members of Biomarker Operation, Bioinformatics, Technology functions, and preclinical translational research
  • Identify and implement pharmacodynamic and predictive biomarkers and their associated assays
  • Drive and execute on biomarker strategies for one or more projects
  • Drive scientific and technical innovation
  • Participate and thrive in an interactive and team-oriented culture
  • Participate in or lead disease area translational biomarker programs


  • Bachelor's Degree in Science related field with 18 years of related work; Master's Degree Science or PharmD with 16 years of related work; PhD in Science or related field with 10 years of related work experience.
  • PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. pathology, molecular biology, cancer genetics, cancer biology, molecular oncology, signaling) is heavily preferred
  • Minimum of 10+ years post-doctoral basic or translational research experience in both academic and industry setting is required
  • Substantial hands-on experience in multiple stages of preclinical drug discovery and early stage drug development is required
  • Ability to collaborate, lead, influence and motivate others is a must
  • Effective mentorship capacity through indirect or direct reporting structure is a plus.
  • Demonstrated record of cutting edge research as evidenced by first- or senior-authored publications in top-tier journals
  • Proactively advises and shares knowledge and expert opinions with peers and senior management. Assesses current and emerging business challenges enabling functional goal achievement.
