Job Description:

The Head of Communications, North America, is responsible for designing, implementing and managing the external and internal corporate communication strategy for Ipsen in North America covering all Ipsen entities in the US and Canada. This includes communications related to Commercial Operations activities and R&D, Technical Operations, External Innovation & Partnering activities in Cambridge, MA. This position will be accountable for developing US media strategies and communications plans, including metrics to measure success and impact, and ensuring that all communications are fully aligned with the strategic positioning and guidelines of the organization.

As a member of the North American Leadership Team, this person will work in a collaborative manner with a variety of internal functions (Public Affairs and Global Communication, Human Resources, Investor Relations, Marketing, Information Technology, Medical Affairs, Research and Development, Media, diverse working groups etc.) and develop partnerships with external third-party organizations and professionals as needed.

This role also has full oversight over the US Patient Advocacy function, including establishing and building relationships with patient advocacy groups to build mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships. Corporate Social Responsibility efforts are also under the oversight and management of the Head of Communications, North America.

This role reports to the CEO of North America in Cambridge, MA., with a dotted line to the Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Communications in Paris, France.

Essential Functions
  • Develop strategies and implement external communications plans to elevate corporate reputation (including for Ipsen Group, Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals in the US and Canada and Ipsen BioScience) and product brand awareness directed at media, patient advocates, healthcare providers, community partners and other key external audiences.
  • Provide strategic counsel to senior executives on matters related to external and internal corporate communications, crisis management and corporate reputation
  • Lead the engagement related strategy plans for the North American Hub in Cambridge, MA
  • Proactively identify, prepare for, and manage issues as needed, including liaising with appropriate functions to secure approval of media statements and manage media.
  • Liaise with Public Affairs and Global Communication and Investor Relations to ensure messaging complies with Group policies and guidelines.
  • Develop and edit communications materials, including non-financial press releases, key messages, Q&A's to support key data milestones, medical congresses, company business milestones, scientific presentations, and corporate and product issues
  • Deploy corporate branding initiatives.
  • Manage US website and US social media channels in compliance with Group policies and guidelines.
  • Develop, oversee and execute internal US employee communications and develop internal tools (i.e. newsletters, intranet community, leadership communications, town halls, etc.)
  • Relay and ensure cascading of Corporate internal communications material
  • Oversee Corporate Communications, Brand PR, and web design agencies and manage associated budgets.
  • Represent Ipsen in key industry and trade association communications workstreams including PhRMA, BIO, NPC, and others


  • Bachelor's Degree, MBA or advance degree a plus

  • 15+ years in internal and external communications
  • Experience building, leading and developing a communications team
  • 10+ years' experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech or life science industry
  • Strong understanding of patient advocacy organizations, coalitions building
  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and biotech ecosystems in the Cambridge area
  • Experience with investor relations preferred
  • Digital / social and Media Relations experience a must
  • French speaking is a plus
