The Clinical PD Biomarkers Program is responsible for identification of biomarkers of response to new targeted agents entering clinical trials in the Developmental Therapeutics Program of the National Cancer Institute. The scope of work includes assay design, development, validation, fitness for purpose testing, transfer of assays to clinical laboratories, and clinical specimen analysis when required. The program facilitates mechanistic and performance analysis of putative anti-cancer agents, diagnostic tests, and therapeutic interventions to clinical applications, including distinct molecular signatures for cancer, refined molecular assays, and state-of-the-art imaging techniques that are too high-risk for industry or academia to pursue.


KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES


The Associate Scientist will be responsible for:
  • Performing complex assignments independently and reporting information to supervisor or scientist
  • Serving as technical authority in the absence of the lead laboratory scientist
  • Working closely with PD Scientists in the planning and implementation of complex in vitro flow cytometry experiments
  • Performing antibody staining of flow cytometry samples for multi-color (8-16 markers) analysis
  • Operating and maintaining multicolor flow cytometers (multiple platforms) and acquiring flow data using the LSR2 or the BD Canto in the Flow Core and/or the AMNIS Image Cytometer in the PADIS group
  • Performing analysis of flow cytometry data as required


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a B.S. degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of ten (10) years of experience working in biomedical research laboratories
  • Five years direct experience with flow cytometry software and operation of multicolor flow cytometer is required
  • Experience with FlowJo or similar analytical software
  • Fluency with written and spoken English is required
  • Ability to maintain electronic notebook records
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience with cell culture, particularly with tumor cell lines and/or T cells and PBMC's, is desirable
  • Experience in pharmacology, T cell differentiation, and cancer immunology
  • Ability to independently develop assays for flow cytometry platforms
  • Experience in developing and validating method SOPs


EXPECTED COMPETENCIES
  • Independently solve research, assay, or production problems utilizing appropriate scientific knowledge germane to the field and present project(s)
  • Must be facile with advanced instrumentation, analysis on advanced software platforms, and methods development
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines to task completion
  • Ability to work within a clinical testing environment (non-CLIA)
