Come work with the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research which is managed by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. for the National Cancer Institute. It is the only U.S. National Laboratory wholly focused on research, technology, and collaboration in the biomedical sciences - working to discover, to innovate, and to improve human health.

The mission of the Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) directorate is to leverage leading-edge data science, informatics and information technology skills and capabilities to provide the world-class tools and services to accelerate translation of biomedical data to scientific discoveries, medical treatments, and diagnostic and prevention innovations for cancer and AIDS patients.

The BIDS Strategic and Data Science Initiatives Group has been established within the BIDS directorate to undertake key initiatives and establish new collaborations in computing and data science to address cancer challenges and accelerate cancer research. A key focus of this group is to provide a secure and robust data management environment for scientific data in accordance with FAIR data principles supporting an increasing level of analysis for the ever-expanding collection of scientific datasets.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Senior Software Engineer:
  • Deliver enterprise software for data services platform. Perform design, development, unit testing, integration and deployment.
  • Define and implement new data service APIs, architectures and capabilities.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to identify, debug and resolve production issues.
  • Provide support for on-boarding users including user account setup and configuration.
  • Maintain high standards of software quality while delivering solutions on-time and within budget.
  • Keep abreast of emerging trends and advances in data and metadata management.
  • Research and evaluate software products and development tools.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • In addition to the education requirements, six (6) years of software development experience, with at least 3 years in a production system.
  • 4+ years of experience in the design, development and testing of enterprise applications. Solid programming skills with Java/J2EE.
  • Experience with MVC frameworks e.g. Spring, Struts.
  • Proficient in RDBMS e.g. Postgres, Oracle. Experienced in ORM frameworks e.g. Hibernate.
  • Experience with web UI libraries and frameworks e.g. JQuery, Ajax, Angular.
  • Experience with RESTful web services.
  • Working knowledge of linux shell scripting.
  • Experience with Source Control systems e.g., Github, SVN.
  • Experience developing JUnit test cases.
  • Experience with debugging, performance profiling and optimization.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience with data management systems handling big data.
  • Experience with object storage technologies e.g. Cleversafe, Amazon S3.
  • Knowledge of data management/data transfer frameworks e.g. iRODS, Globus
  • Experience with Python.
  • Knowledge of scientific workflows.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies.
  • Experience with continuous integration tools e.g. Jenkins, Travis.
  • Familiarity with test automation frameworks e.g. selenium.
