Pharmacyclics is seeking a Discovery Operations Associate II.

General Summary:

Reporting to the Discovery Operation Expert (Process Expert, Contract, Inventory and Lab Management), candidates applying for this position will be responsible for the business needs of department/group, with an emphasis the submission of contract and purchase requests to the relevant IT system. As such, the Discovery Outsourcing Associate will interface daily with internal stakeholders (such as the biology, translational medicine, chemistry and DMPK research team, Discovery Outsourcing Vendor Management Team, Discovery Outsourcing Site Budgets Team, FP&A, Procurement, and Legal) to facilitate contract submissions, answer any questions that arise during negotiation, approval, execution, and maintenance. Importantly, once the PO and contracts are approved, following up with relevant vendors until the product reaches end-users and notify them the status periodically. This role requires the Discovery Outsourcing Associate to be detailed oriented and able to work well in a fast-paced, volume-driven environment.

The Discovery Operation Associate will work closely with the relevant parties in the business, and will be the individual responsible for taking complete control of our in-house compound inventory system, storage and maintenance. This role will facilitate new vendor set up in Buy Smart as needed. This role could potentially be responsible for PO submissions via AX and also serve as a backup person for lab management activities.

Core Tasks:

Primarily responsible for in-house compound management including preparation, storage, tracking, maintenance and submission to relevant parties upon request. To accomplish this, the Discovery Operation Associate will:

  • Work closely with senior team members with Biology Lab Operation responsibilities
  • Reviews and collects compound submission from various sources on a daily basis
  • Prepares stock solutions, updates inventory list and provides them to requested parties internally as well as to local CROs
  • For domestic and international shipments, prepares shipping requests along with relevant MSD documents and works closely with facilities who handles S&H activities to ensure overnight deliveries
  • Works on developing a semi-automated compound management system in-house by working with vendors who have the ability to design and implement such systems
  • Creates own easily searchable data-base for better compound tracking and record keeping
  • Helps scientists in data management and distribution coming out of various CROs
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required


  • 4 year college degree with BA/BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry Life Science,or related field
  • 2+ years compound management experience desired; with 1 year of industrial experience in operating automated liquid handlers
  • Introductory proficiency with compound management, tracking, safety and automation skills
  • Should have good knowledge of handling chemical matters and their safe disposal.
  • Basic knowledge of biology/chemistry lab operations and the various key players involved in running research activities in an R&D setting is highly desired
  • Excellent computer skills and aptitude for learning new systems; experience with lab automation and developing a searchable database is a plus
