The Biotransformation group in DMPK-BA has an open position for an expert in mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) to support drug discovery and development.

The selected candidate will be responsible for the utilization and advancement of MALDI-MSI technology to develop our understanding of tissue distribution as related to safety assessment, metabolism, drug-drug interactions, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacology.

The position will partner across all therapeutic areas including small molecule and biotherapeutic programs.

The candidate will collaborate across various disciplines within AbbVie including chemistry, biology, toxicology and pathology. The individual is expected to have a high level of practical experience in the field of MALDI-MSI, experience using FTICR instrumentation, and possess strong written and oral communication skills.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Designing and executing MSI studies and correlating the data with Safety.
  • Ensuring a world-class scientific approach to MS imaging by implementing and developing tools and processes.
  • Leading scientific initiatives to improve MSI capabilities and combining other imaging techniques (histology, microscopy, and radio imaging) to support drug discovery and development.
  • Expertise in FTICR mass spectrometry and excellent data processing capabilities
  • Monitor innovation and development within the field of MSI.
  • Representing DMPK-BA in project teams

Level will be determined based on education and years of experience.

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or another scientific area
  • 10+ (BS), 8+ (MS), or 0+ (Ph.D) years of experience in a relevant industry
  • Expert in mass spectrometry imaging
  • Proficient with MSI software and data mining tools
  • Broad experience in MALDI mass spectrometry imaging analysis on both small and large molecules
  • Demonstrated expert in sample preparation methods
  • Experience with liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry platforms
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in managing multiple projects and priorities and work well within a team
  • Strong presentation and written/verbal communication skills.


  • Ph.D. focused on MSI or demonstrated extensive experience in MSI
  • Skilled using Bruker FTICR mass spectrometers and data analysis systems.
  • Experience training other scientists on MSI instrumentation and methodology
  • Good understanding of biology or toxicology would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of drug disposition principles
