Position Overview

Lead Discovery pipeline projects from Concept to IND, focused on immunology, oncology and auto-immune disease indications.

Think creatively about the biology and the technology to design best-in-class therapies that make a difference to people. Ensure project goals executed well and that progress is communicated internally and externally. Responsible for a group of scientists whose role is to characterize the mechanism and activity of drug candidates in Nektar's pipeline for regulatory and clinical development, including, for example, tissue culture, cell-based assay development, in vitro and in vivo studies using immunological techniques such as flow cytometry, immune cell isolation, IHC or microscopy. Contribute to the identification, evaluation and recommendation of new drug concepts and platform expansions. Maintain personal expertise in therapeutic disease indications and in the area of PEGylated or other polymer- drug candidates. Contribute to the development of Research Strategy and long range objectives. Coordinate with other functional areas, such as Program Management, Clinical, Pharmaceutical Development, Marketing and G&A. Identify bottlenecks and propose solutions to research management. Effectively manage and develop employees, providing appropriate career development opportunities to direct reports. Prepare goals and budget for functional group. Evaluate external opportunities and manage academic and corporate collaborations as appropriate. Generate publications and presentations that support Nektar's business communicate the value of Nektar's platform. This position contributes to and supports the company's research and development efforts to create high value therapeutics that address unmet medical needs.

Works on complex scientific problems in which analysis of situations or data require in-depth evaluation of multiple variables where not all data is available. Brainstorms on the applicability of multiple biological pathways for designing novel medicines. Exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques to design well-controlled studies and experiments. Mentors junior scientific staff. Ensures budgets, schedules and performance requirements are met. Regularly interacts with senior management. Establishes goals, structures experiments, analyzes and reduces data, recommends and plans actions to achieve project objectives. Work in conjunction with functional teams to transfer and implement pipeline strategies. Maintains knowledge of latest technological/scientific trends. Hires and trains staff at appropriate levels of need, coordinate annual reviews, and counsels junior staff on career related subjects. Provides scientific/technical guidance, leadership and decision-making as appropriate. Provides regular performance feedback, development and coaching to direct reports.

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline is required. An advanced degree is highly desired. Equivalent experience may be accepted. A minimum of 10 years' experience in the pharmaceutical or other technology based product research, development or manufacturing industry is required. A minimum of 8 years' previous management experience is required. Additional Requirements: Immunology and biology principles; must have a proven track record of leading projects and functions in biotechnology; expertise in biotechnological and pharmaceutical R&D; experience in writing scientific and regulatory documents is required; knowledge of advanced statistical techniques, such as data trend analysis and design of experiments, is highly desirable; strong verbal and written communication skills are required; ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects; communicates and relates multiple points of view to others; demonstrated ability to work with senior management; a proven ability to develop and manage to a budget is a must; good laboratory compliance and safety practices are a must; demonstrated ability to develop successful relationships, internally and externally; and understands how to set expectations and negotiate proper milestones to track progress.
