The Protein Biochemistry organization, with staff located in Tarrytown, NY, provides biochemical and biophysical characterization of candidates in support of moving biotherapeutic drugs from late stage research through first-in-human studies. The associate director will manage a group within the protein biochemistry organization and be technically responsible for guiding and contributing to biophysical developability of lead candidates in research, development of analytical methods, and extended biochemical and biophysical characterization in support of IND filings. The candidate will also be responsible for managing the performance and career development of direct reports, serving on or leading cross-functional teams, writing and reviewing technical documents and regulatory submissions, developing analytical strategy, and communicating technical information to appropriate groups and management.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Supervises and mentors a group with accountability for individual performance management (i.e., setting goals and expectations, conducting performance reviews).
  • Together with protein biochemistry senior leadership team, provides high-level vision related to protein therapeutic characterization, develops analytical strategy to ensure group is meeting industry standards and trends, and brings an understanding of regulatory direction.
  • Guides technical development of biochemical and biophysical assays.
  • Ability to manage resources effectively to support the drug development pipeline with a focus on applying rigorous, high standards to the work, while completing deliverables and on time.
  • Participates and/or leads cross-functional development teams, and effectively communicates information to appropriate groups, staff, and supervisor.
  • Reviews technical documents and regulatory submissions. Reviews publications to be submitted in peer-reviewed journals, when appropriate.
  • Consistently demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in cross-functional team environments.
  • Seeks and fosters collaboration and clear communication within protein biochemistry and with key cross-functional stakeholders.

Other Job Responsibilities
  • Guide characterization efforts to support initial toxicology studies.
  • Guide efforts to maximize operational effectiveness of the laboratory including continuous improvement in work practices, procedures, and employ compliance when appropriate.
  • Guide efforts to develop new cutting-edge technologies for improving efficiency or increasing depth of biochemical and biophysical characterization of biotherapeutic candidates.
  • Assist in transfer of methods to Regeneron's quality control group, or other groups, and external partners, when appropriate.
  • Ability to thoroughly analyze and understand methods, results, solves analytical problems, troubleshoots assays, and meets regulatory expectations for analytics.
  • Maintains effective communication with groups within protein biochemistry, R&D, industrial operations and product supply, and regulatory.

  • Graduate degree (PhD) or equivalent in biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, or related field with +8 years of progressive industrial experience is required.
  • Experience in supervising a group with accountability for individual performance management (i.e., setting goals and expectations, conducting performance reviews) is required.
  • Experience leading technical teams, drafting technical documents and supporting CMC regulatory filings, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals are required/
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment are critical.
  • Strong scientific background in protein analysis with hands-on laboratory experience in the biochemical or biophysical characterization of proteins is required.
  • Experience in developing analytical methods, characterizing monoclonal antibodies or other proteins, and strong working knowledge of protein characterization techniques are required.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with liquid chromatography (FPLC, HPLC, and UPLC), static and dynamic light scattering, capillary and gel-based electrophoresis, and spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, CD, FTIR, Raman, DRS, SINS, SANS/SAXS), in silico-based modeling are highly preferred.
