Chemical and Synthetic Development (CSD) is the BMS chemical development organization, located within Global Product Development and Supply (GPS). Through route invention, process invention, and process characterization we discover and define the chemical processes and control strategies that deliver small molecule and synthetic (peptides, oligonucleotides, antibody-drug conjugate) assets for clinical trials and ultimately commercial launch. Seeking an Experienced, impactful and highly talented chemical engineer to lead inter-disciplinary chemical development project teams and manager group of highly skilled chemical engineers to integrate chemical and engineering innovation, data analytics, analytical excellence and technologies to support the development and commercialization of the synthesis to make small molecules and synthetics (peptides, oligonucleotides, drug conjugates).

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability to propose and lead scientific projects, while growing team members to deliver exceptional results. The individual should have a desire to be an active member of our scientific organization encompassing synthetic organic chemists, analytical chemists, chemical technology specialists, and chemical engineers. Located at our New Brunswick, NJ facility, the experienced chemical engineer joining our Chemical and Synthetic Development team will:
  • Apply engineering fundamentals, advanced analysis and innovative technologies to develop safe, reliable and efficient processes.
  • Partner with the leadership of the engineering organization to grow, develop and train the members of the CSD community through leadership, management, coaching and mentoring.
  • Lead inter-disciplinary CSD project teams to integrate chemical and engineering innovation, data analytics, analytical excellence, and technologies to support the development and commercialization of our portfolio.
  • Manage a team of highly skilled chemical engineers.
  • Contribute to the development of our culture of engineering excellence and innovation.
  • Participate in, propose and run departmental initiatives aimed at improving our work practices.
  • Interface across CSD functional areas (analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, engineering and technologies) to execute on our integrated vision.
  • Partner with the CSD Senior Leadership and Portfolio Governance teams to continue to grow our culture of collaboration and innovation
  • Interface with cross-functional CMC development teams to ensure effective development strategies are developed and delivered

Requirements for the position:
  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering with a track record of academic excellence with 10 or more years of relevant industrial experience (laboratory and plant-based).
  • Demonstrated excellence across BMS's Behaviors: Passion, Innovation, Accountability and Speed.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, with a demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex ideas.
  • Able to inspire and lead others.
  • Experience mentoring and growing team members and colleagues.
  • External visibility through peer reviewed publications or presentations is preferred though not required.
