bluebird bio, a pioneer in lentiviral vector-based gene therapies and cellular immunotherapies, is seeking a dynamic, versatile professional to join its growing Medical Affairs team. At bluebird bio we are committed to using cutting-edge science to make a real difference for patients with serious rare and genetic disease. bluebird bio is conducting clinical studies with two autologous hematopoietic stem cell gene therapies: LentiGlobin for transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) and severe sickle cell disease (SCD) and Lenti-D for cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy. These therapies have the potential to offer transformative new options to patients. The LentiGlobin in TDT clinical program is preparing for commercialization and the Manager, Scientific Communication, β-thalassemia will play a critical role in launch preparation and execution. Gene therapy is a ground-breaking field and Medical Affairs is central to commercialization efforts, with critical roles in education and care delivery.

As a key member of the Scientific Communication and Medical Operations (SCMO) team, the Manager, Scientific Communications will contribute to the development and execution of a broad range of content for publications, training, medical information, field medical, and external educational programs for TDT. This individual will report to the Sr. Manager, Scientific Communication, Hemoglobinopathies.

About the role:

Execute global scientific communications and education deliverables for TDT and contribute to the development of the Scientific Communications Strategic Plan for LentiGlobin in TDT
  • Develop high-visibility scientific abstracts, posters, presentations and manuscripts to share ground-breaking new clinical data and real-world evidence
    • Liaise with cross-functional stakeholders including clinical development, clinical operations, data management, statistics, and real-world evidence teams to gather data and plan publication development
    • Lead collaboration with authors on the drafting, review and editing of publications
  • Develop medical educational materials for TDT, including core slide decks, literature summaries and white papers
  • Support content development for advisory boards, symposia, and non-CME educational efforts
  • Develop medical information materials such as standard responses, Q&As, and non-standard responses
  • Support the planning and execution of the Medical Affairs training plan and development of internal training content
  • Execute key tactics for medical congresses, including medical affairs booth educational content development, symposia planning, and vendor management
  • Monitor the external medical and scientific landscape through targeted literature searches and analyses to educate internal stakeholders and inform content development
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant internal and external standards and model good publication practice including following ICMJE and GPP3 guidance

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field required; PhD or PharmD preferred with 2+ years in a biotechnology/pharmaceutical or medical research environment required
  • A combination of scientific publication and cross-functional scientific and medical communication experience is desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy; experience in scientific writing and publications highly desirable
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to critically appraise medical/scientific literature
  • Ability to travel for scientific congress meetings as necessary (
