The Account Director (AD) provides high-level strategic counsel to AbbVie clients, working with internal staff and external resources to deliver meetings, creative and communications solutions that are both cost-effective and high quality. The AD leads a staff of resources, partners with internal AbbVie departments and external vendors to facilitate the successful delivery of AbbVie client strategies. The position supports AbbVie clients across all headquarter functions and conducts meetings and events globally. This position requires managing staff who oversee large-scale complex initiatives that include multiple interdependencies as well as managing multiple functions without direct authority. The AD works independently and without direct authority supporting AbbVie's senior leadership team. Excellent communication and negotiation skills are essential. The position requires strategizing with clients to identify focused, clear and concise business solutions

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Partner with business areas to understand their strategies, tactics and annual plans. Partnering with other BSG functions to assess the impact resulting in recommendations around resources and capabilities needed to support the business
  • Lead Account Managers (AMs) and Account Executives (AEs) in delivering business areas strategy and initiatives. Partner with business and other functions within BSG to develop new and enhancing existing relationships with divisional partners. Guide team to ensure the successful development and execution of projects. Must understand all key areas of BSG to appropriately represent the capabilities and Leverage all expertise within BSG to ensure successful deliver of the project in a cost effective manner.
  • Oversee Project Managers (PMs) to ensure deadlines are met and key deliverables are complete. Prioritize team projects and allocate appropriate resources.
  • Provide leadership across BSG demonstrating collaboration across the teams within BSG to achieve clients' business objectives and strategies. Identify new and improved ways of working within BSG leading to improved service levels or more cost effective ways of operating.
  • Manage the performance of direct reports. Responsible for hiring, training, developing and motivating staff to achieve organizational objectives. Ensures staff performs administrative activities such as developing client project plans, accurate monthly billing and charging for services necessary to support operating model. Responsible to maintain staffing levels and performance to achieve utilization targets and account team financial goals. Comply with applicable Corporate Policies, Procedures and mandatory Training.
  • Identify emerging business owner needs and market trends. Positively influence the long-term plan for Business Services Group including: change management, new or expanded product or service offerings, talent acquisition, process improvements and financial commitments to AbbVie.
  • Specific extensive experience in creative, marketing communication, meetings, events and production process is essential. The position must adapt to changing external influences.
  • Considers succession planning; develops team members to assume expanded roles in the organization.


  • As the client's proxy within Business Services Group this position requires that he/she possess high -level management skills to ensure optimum performance from the meetings and events, compliance creative and production teams.
  • The position must also possess a high-level of customer-focused, business development skills and a broad understanding of the meeting and events, creative and production process. The AD must be able to quickly develop trust, credibility and rapport with clients, while delivering strategic solutions often working in ambiguous situations.
  • The Account Director must be an excellent communicator with clientele and internal staff to be able to meet critical corporate priorities. This person must be able to work tactfully and effectively with all levels of employees at AbbVie, up to and including the company's CEO, as well as with external vendors.
  • The Account Director must be self-motivated, willing to take on additional responsibilities, and need little or no supervision. Because of the close interaction with all levels of management, people skills and professionalism are a must.
  • The Account Director must demonstrate strong business acumen and the ability to anticipate client/business, leadership and internal team needs
  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience: Communication, Marketing, Advertising or Business
  • 5+ years previous Account Management or Sales experience
  • 6+ years previous Project Management in an agency or in-house creative environment
  • Master's Degree: Preferred
  • International work experience and/or support of a Global function desired
