Project Description: The internship/co-op opportunity will focus on the design characterization and development of the 2mL BD Ultra Safe Plus device. The project will include a three-step development evaluation of the device design and its compatibility with the different drug product volumes and containers:

• Design Input Development: Identifying the inputs, requirements, and business expectations for the 2mL Safety System device, is a critical part at the start of any development. Understanding these requirements and parameters is important to help determine what kind of assessments/experiments will need to be completed, for characterization. Requirements include needs from different perspectives such as design, business, supply/manufacture, and regulatory.

• Design Assessment: An assessment of the 2mL Safety System Plus Design with commonly used configurations (ie: 'Ompi/Standard Piston', 'Neo/Nova', etc.) will be assessed. A tolerance stack-up will be developed as an output of this assessment; indicating the overall tolerance of the assembled combination product and assessing any potential assembly complications/challenges involved in assembling the final combination product device design. A 'worst case' method analysis and/or root sum square (root mean square) analysis will be completed as a part of the tolerance stack up assessment. The tolerance stack-up can be further assessed with potential package and labelling components for the device design.

• Design of Experiments (DOE): Design of Experiments refers to the process of planning, designing, and analyzing experiments that can objectively, and statistically support effective and efficient conclusions. The DOE for this design will be important to understand the design variability of the system, and the relationship between the primary container configuration and device design. The DOE will include an assessment of various functional tests that are commonly performed with the safety system device design. Varying parameters include (not limited to): volume, viscosity, glass barrel, and other design parameters that are critical to the functionality of the device. A statistically powered sample set will be mechanically tested with the varying design parameters, and its impact to the functionality of the safety system. A statistical analysis will be conducted to understand relationship and functionality differences between the different parameters.
Desired Majors and/or Skills:
- Majors: Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Industrial Engineer, or Engineering Related.

- Statistics (Minitab), Laboratory Basics, Microsoft Office, Data Analysis, CAD Modeling, Time Management, Presentation Skills, Planning Skills.

Desired Education Level:
- Rising Jr. or Rising Sr.
