AveXis, Inc., a Novartis Company , is a clinical-stage gene therapy company, dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product candidate, AVXS-101, is our proprietary gene therapy product candidate currently in development for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, Type 1, the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, and for the treatment of SMA Type 2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has granted AVXS-101 Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of all types of SMA and Breakthrough Therapy Designation, as well as Fast Track Designation for the treatment of SMA Type 1. In addition to developing AVXS-101 to treat SMA Type 1 and Type 2, we also plan to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome (RTT) and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

The Executive Director, Global Market Access will be responsible for developing and implementing market access and policy strategies to ensure the successful launch and growth of AVXS-101 worldwide. He / she will ensure global market access strategies are aligned with corporate and commercial strategies, including positioning, country sequencing, price corridors, price / volume tradeoffs, and corporate stance on topics such as market entry, reference pricing and managed access programs. The Executive Director, Global Market Access will serve as a primary point of contact for cross-functional stakeholders related to market access and public affairs in markets globally. The current focus of the role is on the company's lead program, AVXS-101 in SMA; over time, other product candidates and diseases will be under the scope of this role.


  • Assist in key global market access initiatives, working closely with global health outcomes and economics research, global business analytics and regional leadership to include management and implementation of global pricing and access strategy, refinement of AVXS-101 value proposition and core value messages, and negotiation strategy.
  • Drive market access implementation of a fit for purpose Managed Access Program for AVXS-101 for ex-US markets.
  • Support value communication plan and execution in close collaboration with Public Relations, Investor Relations, Medical Affairs, Commercial, and other key stakeholders.
  • Lead Global Pricing operations (pricing strategy implementation, pricing approval process, etc.) and ensure proper pricing governance.
  • Support global launch of AVXS-101 and implementation of market access, pricing, and reimbursement plan, in partnership with the global commercial team and regional commercial and market access leads.
  • Lead key market access initiatives, including payer advisory boards, and coordinate regional feedback to ensure local and regional market access needs are considered and incorporated in clinical and commercial plans.
  • Work closely with regional heads of Marketing and Advocacy, who will focus on patient groups, to shape a favorable policy environment for access, including newborn screening for SMA.
  • Proactively identify targeted opportunities with payers, HTA bodies, and other stakeholders to enable access and reimbursement for gene therapies and for rare diseases.
  • Plan, organize and co-facilitate cross-functional Global Health Economics and Access Strategy Team meetings in collaboration with team co-leads to ensure all initiatives (e.g., HEOR, Market Access, Business Insights, Policy) are fully integrated, aligned and on-schedule to support the value of AVXS-101 and ensure launch readiness globally.
  • Instill, support, and role model a culture of ethics and integrity.
  • Operate within approved budgets.
  • Maintain industry awareness in scope of responsibilities regarding external landscape and trends.


The successful candidate will possess 7+ years of experience as a market access leader that includes the launch and commercialization of innovative, first-in-class specialty pharmaceutical products across several regions internationally during his / her career. Having successfully held a role of similar capacity at another company as well as having experience in emerging markets in preferred. The ability to work across multiple functions, geographies and cultures and in a company with global functions in the US is required. Prior experience in rare diseases, in high-value products, and in a small, rapidly growing company are preferred. A B.S. or similar degree is required and an advanced degree (Masters, Doctorate, or similar degree) is preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English is required and proficiency in one of the major languages spoken in the region is preferred.

Other qualifications include:
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and execution of market access plans for highly specialized products
  • Successful first-hand ex-US experience in pricing, reimbursement and access for high-value products in rare diseases, including at least the EU5/UK, with experience in emerging markets preferred
  • Experience in developing and executing risk-sharing agreements and in-country outcomes registries in partnership with HEOR and Medical Affairs
  • A penchant for the science and economics of medicines and a creative mind; ability to create a compelling value story with payers and policymakers
  • Team player with the ability to work collaboratively in a regional organization
  • Executive presence; able to effectively represent the Company internally and externally
  • Entrepreneurial, decisive, and have the tenacity to "make things happen"
  • A genuine care for patients and a desire to make a meaningful difference in their lives

This position is based in the Bannockburn headquarters. Travel is estimated to be 30-40%.

The level of this position will be based on the final candidate's qualifications.
