The primary function of this role is to lead the planning and execution of medium to large capital projects supporting the Process R&D API Pilot Plant and Laboratories within the Research and Development organization of AbbVie. Process R&D supports AbbVie's pharmaceutical pipeline through process development and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for pre-clinical toxicology studies, clinical trials, formulation development, and registration runs.

In addition to capital project management, this function will also contribute to the development of the capital plan and long term business strategy by identification of capital improvements required to meet pipeline demands. Other responsibilities may include collaboration with process engineers, chemists and pilot plant operations on the introduction of new processes and technologies into the pilot plant and provide technical assistance with the transfer of processes or equipment technologies to commercial sites. Additionally, this role may also provide technical support to the pilot plant as needed.

Key Responsibilities
    Responsible for all phases of the capital project lifecycle for projects up to $10MM related to the installation of new process/laboratory equipment and/or renovation of existing facilities. Project front end planning including: development of user requirements, economic and feasibility analysis, scope development, conceptual and schematic design, cost estimating, and project execution planning. Preparation of financial documents including: requests for capital expenditure, capital defense packages and front end planning presentations. Project execution including: detail design, procurement, construction management, cost and schedule control, project status reports, commissioning, and qualification. Project closeout including capitalization of assets, reconciliation of project expenditures and preparation of project closure notices. Provide technical assistance related to the operation and maintenance of equipment, facilities and utilities. Assess performance of process equipment and control systems and recommend and/or design performance improvements to positively impact cycle time, product yield or quality. Troubleshoot equipment problems, perform root cause analysis and identify corrective actions.

Level will be based on education & years of experience


  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering with at least 10+ years of related industry experience.
  • Proven track record of managing capital projects to completion, using extensive external resources.
  • Demonstrated excellence in breadth and depth of knowledge within project management.
  • A technical background in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, particularly in the areas of small molecule API plant design/construction, clean utilities and/or laboratory design/construction preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of government regulations including: building and fire codes, FDA cGMPs, local and federal environmental regulations, and OSHA regulations.
