Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products - Imbruvica®, Venclexta™, and Empliciti™ - and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.

AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position will be based at Stemcentrx, AbbVie's South San Francisco, CA location.


The Postdoctoral Program is designed for true investigational and experimental research. Participants will be mentored by renowned industry scientists and collaborators at AbbVie and focused on delivering cutting-edge advancements in Discovery, Development Sciences and BioPharma.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in our Discovery Immuno-Oncology group at AbbVie Redwood City, CA. The primary aim of this Postdoctoral appointment will be to understand the cellular, transcriptional and epigenetic characteristics of agonist signaling during an immune response to cancer in mouse models. The secondary aim will be to develop and implement cutting-edge immunological techniques such as High Dimensional cytometry, single cell RNA-Seq and epigenetic profiling.

The ideal candidate will have a background in general immunology, with a requirement for basic molecular biology and multicolor flow cytometry experience. The preferred candidate will also have High Dimensional cytometry experience (such as CYTOF, FACS), have performed antibody-fluor conjugations and have basic cell culture as well as molecular biology such as molecular cloning and real time PCR experience. Experience with bioinformatics data analysis approaches is also preferred.

The position will work collaboratively across multiple groups and sites within AbbVie, so excellent collaborative and communication skills are required. A proactive and innovative attitude is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be managed by a small team of advisors with expertise in all areas of active research. There will be many opportunities to interact across Discovery and Development groups at AbbVie. Presentation and publications of results from the research is expected.

Key Responsibilities Includes:

  • Independently design, execute and interpret critical experiments to answer scientific questions.
  • Understand the broad objectives of the project as well as their role in achieving those objectives, and modify experimental plan when required, to respond.

  • Contribute to writing and conceptual framework of publications, presentations, and patents.
  • Routinely read and apply relevant scientific literature. Impact projects mostly through lab and/or pilot plant based activities where applicable.
  • Publish and disseminate data via external conferences and peer-reviewed publications

  • Successful completion and defense of a PhD. Minimum graduate school GPA 3.0; 3.5 preferred. Graduate of accredited and nationally ranked university
  • Record of publication in a prestigious journal(s)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills including critical and analytical thinking
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills. Demonstrated scientific writing skills and strong verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute experiments, interpret data, and identify appropriate follow-up strategies.
  • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, initiative, and integrity. Global mindset to thrive in a diverse culture and environment
