Associate Director—Gene Therapy Research

Location: Cambridge, MA

Description of Position: Apic Bio is seeking an Associate Director to head our R&D group. The individual will be energetic, self-motivated with a desire to succeed at the highest level joining a team of scientists aiming to develop unique AAV/gene therapy programs for rare, life-threatening indications in the Hepatic and Neurological space. The individual will oversee the R&D team to design and execute key experiments required to progress Research programs to early Development. As lead of the R&D team the candidate will have significant responsibility to drive success of several projects at various stages of development with opportunities to acquire new skills in an innovative and fast-paced environment. The position offers the opportunity to take part in the rapid translation of late-stage preclinical work to progress our proprietary technology platform to the clinic, as well as direct several early-stage projects to further leverage our platform.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D capabilities to support AAV/Gene therapy technology platform for targeted Hepatic and Neuro indications
  • Oversee early discovery projects including design, development and implementation of a variety of assays to mechanistically understand the target of interest and establish proof of concept in Hepatic and Neuro preclinical models
  • Drive development activities of lead programs and ensure timely milestone completion.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance of laboratory records and procedures
  • Deliver summaries of data for communication with various shareholders, communicate with external partners on key progress related to various programs
  • Report data internally and make recommendations to management

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Virology, or a related discipline with 5-10 years of research experience in AAV/Gene Therapy
  • In-depth knowledge of Gene Therapy and Animal Models for Hepatic and CNS indications
  • Industrial drug development experience with demonstrated ability to lead small team in program development and execute strategic initiatives
  • Proven track record for striving for high level of inter-disciplinary problem solving, innovation and scientific excellence
  • Experience with rAAV vectorology, production and purification, gene transfer, gene silencing, gene editing including CRISPR/Cas9, animal models of diseases for Hepatic and CNS indications, non-human primates (NHP), early toxicology studies is required;
  • Experience with NHP and IND-enabling study design is required
  • Highly analytical mind, attention to detail, and proven managerial and organizational skills are critical
  • Collaborative and proactive attitude
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
