The employee benefits attorney will report to the Head Counsel, Executive Compensation & Employee Benefits, and support the AbbVie Total Rewards programs in partnership with colleagues from several functional areas to ensure compliance with IRS, DOL, SEC and other applicable laws and regulations. Target candidates for this position will have experience with qualified retirement plans, health and welfare benefits and executive compensation arrangements. Excellent communication skills, strong academic credentials and a team-oriented approach are required.

Key Responsibilities Includes:
  • Draft, review and revise plan documents and amendments, trust agreements, summary plan descriptions and employee communications and disclosures
  • Interpret laws and plan documents governing the Total Rewards programs and advise Total Rewards colleagues on plan design and operational matters
  • Draft, review, revise, and interpret vendor agreements for service providers supporting benefit plans
  • Support benefit plan governance and fiduciary matters, such as advising on benefit claims and appeals, assisting with committee operations and monitoring legal developments involving plan investments and other topics
  • Assist with proxy statement drafting and compensation data collection

  • Juris Doctorate degree and admitted to practice in the United States
  • 5 or more years of employee benefits legal experience
  • Solid knowledge of qualified and non-qualified defined contribution plans and health and welfare benefit plans; defined benefit pension experience would be a plus
  • Fundamental understanding of ERISA and Internal Revenue Code requirements applicable to employee benefit plans
  • Experience advising and representing plan sponsors and fiduciaries in employee benefit matters
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong project and time management skills
  • Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously and to reprioritize on short notice
  • Willingness to learn and assist with securities compliance and corporate governance matters
