Primary Job Function

The Operations-Benefits Sr. Specialist is a key part of AbbVie's Human Resource (HR) Operations group supporting the HR Operations delivery model. The Benefits Senior Specialist is responsible for supporting US benefits administration, including partnering with vendors to resolve Tier 2/3 benefit issues, advocacy for employees related to health care issues, and oversight of retirement plan administration. The Benefits Senior Specialist will also provide guidance, training, and leadership to other Specialists.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide Tier 2 & 3 support for escalated health and welfare issues not resolved by external vendors or the HR Central service center.
  • Support includes employees, their dependents and retirees in the US.
  • Contribute to HR Operations initiatives, projects and goals, including annual Open Enrollment and other implementations.
  • Advocate for employees related to healthcare issues - work directly with the employee and vendor(s) to resolve claims issues
  • Attend benefits orientations to present AbbVie benefits and assist with FAQs.
  • Conduct research and due diligence for 2nd level ERISA appeals.
  • Process billing for all benefit plans, including ASO and claims.
  • Manage state law filings, where needed.
  • Support benefits enrollment and administration for international relocations and global assignees.
  • Provide data/documentation as required for plan audits and other projects as assigned.
  • Manage issues and data problems with vendors who provide services to active and retired employees.
  • Keep management informed of vendor performance issues or potential employee impacts.
  • Provide primary support for retirement plan administration - 401(k)discrimination testing, manage contribution make-ups, support quarterly load in arrears reports, collect pension offsets, adjust service dates for rehires and contract conversions.
  • Train and oversee less experienced and more junior employees.
  • Other responsibilities, activities and projects as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Benefits Experience- 3 years.
  • Must have excellent business writing and oral communications skills.
  • Needs strong project management skills.
  • Must pay close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be a proficient user of MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Must work well in a team environment and also be able to contribute independently.
  • Must be self-directed and able to handle large, concurrent projects at the same time with minimal supervision.


  • Advanced degree is a plus
  • CEBS or SHRM designation
