Counsel/Senior Counsel provides legal advice and resolves significant legal matters for AbbVie's research and development functions to support complex, strategic contractual relationships related to pharmaceutical research and development, research collaborations and other strategic alliances.

Core Job Responsibilities:

The Research and Development Counsel/Senior Counsel is responsible for identifying and resolving highly complex legal issues related to pharmaceutical research, development, and collaborations.

The Research and Development Counsel/Senior Counsel should:

  • Possess in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical research and development, AbbVie's business and key therapeutic areas, and knowledge of the broader business impact of research collaborations and other strategic alliances.
  • Keep abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas.
  • Be capable of regularly negotiating independently with partners, customers, suppliers or government agencies on matters of strategic importance that affect a substantial portion of AbbVie's business or areas of significant importance to senior management.
  • Direct the work of outside counsel, define project objectives and manage projects.
  • Identify unmet needs and future legal issues and proactively proposes strategies to optimize outcomes and results for the company.
  • Appropriately manage paraprofessional staff to achieve business objectives and manage risk.
  • Advise legal department managers of critical project developments in a timely manner.
  • Execute core job responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Take ownership of resolving matters with significant impact to the AbbVie business.
  • Advise Managers, Directors, Division Vice Presidents and Officers
  • Recognized by clients, management and other attorneys as both expert in substantive area and as resource with innovative ideas in highly complex areas of law and relied upon for individual advice.
  • May have direct budget responsibility and manages significant budget issues.
  • Responsible attorney for complex, strategic agreements related to pharmaceutical research and development, research collaborations and other strategic alliances, clinical manufacture and supply, device and formulations.
  • Advise clients, including senior management, on a wide variety of legal matters in the area of pharmaceutical research, development and strategic alliances.
  • Assist Senior Legal Staff on matters of significant importance to AbbVie that affect a substantial portion of AbbVie's R & D business.
  • May initiate and/or lead large projects, involving the coordination of multiple disciplines.
  • Serve as recognized source, for both management and other attorneys, of innovative ideas in complex areas of law, business, or technology. Provides significant input in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Provide legal guidance, supervision, and support to paralegals and legal support staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Expert pharmaceutical collaborations and providing legal advice on pharmaceutical research and development.
  • Experience managing other professionals and staff.
  • Must possess a J.D. degree
  • Must meet the professional licensing requirement of the state in which they practice within a two-year time period, although the General Counsel may make exceptions under appropriate circumstances.
