Position Summary

Head of Strategy & Innovation - Americas Medical Affairs will report into the VP, Medical Affairs of the Americas. The position will support and partner with the VP, Medical Affairs and Global MA, to ensure the successful delivery of Global and North America objectives; via the effective definition of innovation and strategy; timely operational implementation and effective interactions and communication with Medical Affairs to transform business strategy for Ipsen NA.

Specifically, the role will require partnership with core functions within various Ipsen Group and NA Operations (such as R&D, Business Unit Leads, Value & Access, Finance, HR, Marketing, Sales, Business Operations & Legal); coordination and preparation of supervisor for key internal strategic meetings; and proactive management of the interfaces (senior company's leadership and core functions) to enhance execution and delivery for innovative Medical Affairs activities and projects.

As the organization transforms, it is imperative that business critical decisions are taken confidentially, and in a timely and appropriate manner. It will be the role of the Head to enable, creative innovative facilitation of various business undertakings and processes and decisions to benchmark new best operational practice at Ipsen.

Essential Functions


Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

NA Transformative Management and Corporate Projects 40%

  • Create new best practices and develop core ways of working to be leveraged locally and globally.
  • Build and execute transformation plan for Medical. Proactively and appropriately communicate transformation plan (with action plan proposals), if and when appropriate.
  • Execute plans for Medical Affairs optimization
  • Critically assess opportunities and risks to ensure informed decisions
  • Adapt in an "agile" way to keep in perspective the big picture and effective implementation of plans and strategies for NA medical affairs
  • Monitor delivery and ensure consistency of Corporate dashboards and KPIs across functions
  • Build strong relationships with sponsors and other key stakeholders across the business who support and lead change efforts related to Medical Affairs
  • Manage overall Medical Affairs communication and change management calendar to ensure appropriate timing and delivery of North America transformation efforts
  • Coach, mentor, and lead those responsible for creating and leading changes as appropriate
  • Promote key initiatives and identify communication opportunities while partnering with support functions (HR, communications, etc.) to support these efforts.

Leadership 25%

  • Key lead on the recruitment and building of the new NA Medical Affairs team. Part of the interview panel and selection process.
  • Build comprehensive understanding of all core business functions of Ipsen's organization and apply that knowledge to effectively manage strategic and tactical initiatives according to our vision
  • Influence at all levels of Ipsen Group (R&D, TechOps, BD, Global Medical, etc.) as appropriate
  • Identify in a proactive way all issues within Medical Affairs that impact successful execution of business objectives and decide upon timely escalation for resolution
  • Resolve conflict to enable effective decisions by Medical Affairs Leadership team, through ability to influence others, objectivity, and supporting data/insights
  • Develop and implement different negotiation strategies and tactics depending on circumstances to deliver win-win outcomes across functions
  • Encourage the empowerment of individuals and teams

Medical Affairs Operations (Meetings & Communications) 15%

  • Lead Medical Affairs team meetings to ensure effective use of time, promote quality of decision making, focus on critical topics, and follow-up to actions noted
  • Directly prepare VP of Medical Affairs for upcoming NALT or Global meetings, internal (e.g. GLT meetings) and/or external discussions and liaise with Ipsen subject matter experts to prepare presentations (e.g., ASCO)
  • Ensure timely delivery of minutes and monitor action plans
  • Define key messages to be cascaded across Medical Affairs as appropriate
  • Liaise with NA and Corporate communications teams for internal and external communications regarding Medical Affairs

Key Projects 20%

  • Identify, manage and lead key Medical Affairs projects. Lead new innovative process, track deliverables, highlight risks to timeline execution, and prepare core communications for Executive NALT Leadership.
  • Assist and/or lead in Global Medical Affair projects, as needed.
  • Complies with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Ipsen U.S. staff


  • PharmD or PhD required; MBA preferred

  • Minimum of 15 years+ experience in the pharmaceutical industry with experience in leadership roles, especially in matrix environments and global environments;
  • Experience in growing, mid-size pharma environments
  • Creative, innovative thinking and pro-active leadership in implementing new benchmarking operational processes and activities that differentiate Ipsen Medical Affairs differently from other companies
  • Thorough understanding of medical affairs organization
  • Good planning, analytical, time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent leading, influencing & communication skills
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working alone or as part of a larger team
  • Experience working on and leading Global teams; Global/International experience required
