Position Summary

TheSr Director, Medical Operations and MSL Lead isa "general manager" role responsible for overseeing the MSL Team and all Medical Affairs Operations (Sponsored Event planning, Clinical Trials, Medical Education Grants, Pharmacovigilance/Patient Safety. Success in this role will have a positive impact on the success of Ipsen's portfolio as the function and region continue to evolve. The MSL & Medical Operations Head must be able to engage effectively at all levels of the organization, particularly ensuring that MSLs are seen as a reliable and trusted source of scientific and medical information on Ipsen's products. In addition, the MSL & Medical Operations Head must create a culture of high accountability and data-driven performance, improving the engagement and proactivity of field medical, and fostering a collaborative relationship with other teams, including Commercial and Market Access teams, while remaining necessarily independent.

In this capacity, the role will supervise all activities of regionally based MSLs for all therapeutic indications and products to develop and manage and relationships with Key Opinion Headers (KOLs), oversee development & use of MSL materials and tools, support Ipsen's sponsored clinical trial activities, provide training, and oversee MSL responses to Medical Information Requests. This individual's clinical insights will be used cross functionally to ensure proper alignment of MSL goals with the company's business goals to be executed in a compliant fashion. He/She will develop MSL performance metrics and develop MSL procedures and processes.

While the primary responsibilities of this position focuses on management of the entire MSL group and oversight of the Head of Medical Operations for all medical affairs-related operations, secondary responsibilities include representing Ipsen Medical Field Science in US headquarters in on-going activities and special projects as warranted.

The Medical Operations Head reports into this position, and is responsible for managing all clinical operations, processes and documentation related to Investigator-Sponsored Studies (ISS), Medical Affairs or R&D sponsored trials, sponsored event planning (advisory boards, roundtable meetings, investigator meetings, etc), pharmacovigilance/patient safety reporting requirements, medical education grant coordination.

This role reports to the Head of the US Medical Head and is based in Ipsen Cambridge, MA campus.

Responsibilities:
  • Head and manage the entire US MSL team of 27 MSLs, including 4 regional managers, and a Head of Medical Operations.
  • Head/assist the team in identifying and developing relationships with national and regional medical and scientific KOLs consistent with the strategy and objectives of Medical Affairs and overall Ipsen strategies in relation to All Ipsen products included in neurology, oncology and rare disease
  • Head/assist the team in engaging in scientific exchange and education about current and emerging therapies in a compliant fashion with KOLs in relation to All Ipsen products included in neurology, oncology and rare disease, (to include advisory boards, individual meetings, and congresses).
  • Assure that all medical operational activities related to ISS or sponsored clinical trials are properly and timely executed and comply with our timelines established by the company's SOP
  • Develop and maintain scientific, clinical and therapeutic expertise in the area of Neurology, Oncology and rare diseases (endocrinology)
  • Represent the company at specific continuing medical educational events, programs, medical meetings and scientific conventions
  • Head/assist the team in partnering with Medical Affairs and Drug Information Services to ensure accurate delivery of medical and scientific information, as needed.
  • Head/assist the team to proactively identify and assist as needed in facilitation of externally-sponsored clinical trials.
  • Identify disease concepts that can be leveraged into product differentiation in relation to All Ipsen products included in neurology, oncology and rare disease.
  • Differentiate Ipsen as the valued scientific partner of choice through innovative initiatives, coordinated strategy and scientific communication.
  • Head/assist the team in providing appropriate scientific, clinical, and educational support for internal and external customers (including other members of the MSL team), including for managed care accounts and organizations
  • Support medical publications as needed (abstracts, manuscripts, etc).
  • Head/assist the team in supporting commercial operations by participating in Speaker and Representative Training in relation to All Ipsen products included in neurology, oncology and rare disease.
  • Head/participate on special project teams as necessary.
  • Coordinate scientific activities with medical affairs, clinical development, and global franchise group, as needed.

Qualifications

Education
  • Masters or Doctoral Degree (in Biological Sciences preferred)

Experience
  • Minimum 5-7 years in pharmaceutical industry (preferably in Onocology/hematology, Neurology/CNS/Endocrinology)
  • Minimum 3 years experience in managing Field-based Medical Scientist (MSL)
  • Minimum of 3 years in managing medical operations, including clinical trial related activities

Core Competencies
  • Experience in preparation of materials for use by Medical Affairs
  • Poised, knowledgeable verbal scientific presenter with experience in presentations within Pharma industry and externally (medical congresses)
  • Knowledge of customer segments and market dynamics
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to Head cross functional teamwork
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and assist in developing and maintain credible and scientific relationships with top experts in disease areas of interest
  • Knowledge of PhRMA, OIG and other guidelines relating to compliant medical communications preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in ability to synthesize and communicate medical information clearly
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact easily with all levels within the organization; tactful; mature; flexible

Communication & Interpersonal Skills
  • Experience in preparation of materials for use by Medical Affairs and experience in review/editing promotional materials
  • Skill level with relevant PC and software programs including Microsoft Word and Power Point
  • Ability to communicate scientific and clinical information clearly and crediblty
  • Ability to interact easily with all levels within the organization; tactful; mature; flexible; must have ethics and integrity
  • High level of collaboration and influencing skills
