Cell Therapy Development & Operations

The Principal Scientist in Attribute Science group within Product Science Team, Cell Therapy Development & Operations (CTDO) at Celgene carries the responsibilities for supporting cellular therapy product pipeline development via characterization of products and defining critical quality attributes (CQAs). Specifically, the incumbent is responsible for developing analytical methods for characterization of cell therapy products, both from internal Celgene pipelines and from third-party collaborations, from candidate nomination through lifecycle management, and looking for correlations with clinical outcomes in collaboration with Translational Development (TD). This individual will be a key member of the Attribute/Product Science group and is anticipated to make significant contributions to advance biological and mechanistic understanding of cellular therapeutic products.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead a team of junior scientists with responsibility for product characterization, including assay development, high-throughput screening, and data analysis.
  • Manage and mentor junior scientists and provide input into personnel decisions including performance appraisals, promotions, hiring, and other personnel related activities.
  • Contribute to the scientific, technical and operational efforts within Attribute/Product Science with regards to product characterization, CQA definition, new assay conceptualization, selection, and method development.
  • Share responsibility for the group's scientific and technical standards, critical review of documentation and reports, and setting analytical strategy to support product development.
  • Interpret data clearly and concisely in documents and present results in an organized manner.
  • Identify and apply novel technology and expertise to enhance analytical capability for product and process characterization.
  • Work closely with Molecular Profiling and New Biology groups to design and execute in vitro studies to advance cell therapy product knowledge and define product attribute candidates.
  • Interface and collaborate closely with process and analytical development to support CMC development and advance cellular therapy pipelines.
  • Communicate with project team and colleagues effectively and work well with others to meet experimental and organizational goals.
  • Pursue externalization of scientific results through publication and presentation to the broader scientific community.
  • As required, conduct due diligence and otherwise support business development initiatives to add assets to the Celgene cellular immunotherapy portfolio.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Ph.D. in relevant scientific discipline required.
  • Strong cellular immunology background with the emphasis on T cell biology.
  • Expertise and experience in adoptive T cell therapy is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry with exposure to cell therapy or biologics development.
  • Demonstrated ability for critical thinking, problem solving and innovation.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and negotiation.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional stakeholders in a complex/changing global environment.

Education Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in relevant scientific field with at least 5 years of relevant experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry
