Associate Director, Facilities

General Position Summary/Purpose:

The Associate Director of Facilities Operations and Engineering is responsible to oversee the 24 x 7 day to day running of our Sunnyvale Campus Operations. Our campus consists of 270k sqft spread over multiple buildings for a 1300+ workforce. Pharmacyclics, owned by AbbVie a global pharmaceutical company, has invested considerably in the Sunnyvale campus over the last 2 years to accommodate the company's growth. Next to regular office space, the site hosts a new lab infrastructure, a gym, a café and an onsite bike program.

The Associate Director of Facilities Operations and Engineering is responsible to continuously improve the workplace experience for the Pharmacyclics onsite workforce and significantly contributes to the overall employee satisfaction. He/She provides leadership for Engineering, Lab GxP compliance, facility project management and Facility Services (Café, food services, janitorial services, Shipping & Receiving).

He/She reports to the Head of Facilities & EHS.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Service the employees with their facility engineering related needs, ensuring their productivity is optimally maintained.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining departmental engineering policies and procedures assuring compliance with City, County, State and Federal Health and Safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Responsible for overseeing Laboratory Operations assuring that the in-house needs of the research staff are met for glassware, supplies and sterilization.
  • Responsible for café operation and maintenance.
  • Responsible for planning and managing budget to ensure economic and competitive pricing and spend.
  • Manage and maintain general building functions, including HVAC systems.
  • Manage repairs, upkeep, cleaning, and general assurance of proper presentation of the facilities, exterior/interior, and all grounds (repaint walls, fix blinds, change lights, shampoo carpet, for example).
  • Oversee facility planning, design and execution (reconfiguration, build outs for example) and moves (movement of employee offices).
  • Oversee three bid contract processes, negotiation of costs, pricing etc. Oversee PO management making sure Facilities is adhered to Finance/Purchasing policy.
  • Contract and oversee maintenance and repair performed by contractors. (building companies / project management/janitorial services/lab services)
  • Interfaces internally with other departments, for example, Chemical Operations, Research, Development, Quality Assurance and Human Resources as well as corporate partners.
  • Interfaces externally with federal, state, county and city agencies during yearly audits (fire, chemical storage and chemical waste, biohazardous waste, waste water inspections) in collaboration with the EH&S department.


  • Requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent number of years of experiences.
  • Must have at least 10+ years of experience in cGMP or regulated facilities, preferable in a Biotech/Pharma environment
  • Prior success in maintaining 100,000 plus sqft facilities, including remodeling, moving and expansions.
  • Demonstrated capacity to skillfully collaborate & communicate with all levels of employees as well as outside vendors and contractors
  • Ability to respond to sensitive issues and interface with senior leaders.
  • Staff management experience (performance & development) is absolutely required. Must have experiences in lab and office built out construction projects.
  • Must be results oriented with strong track record of success in delivering quality workspace to employees.
