Brand Technology Lead, Connected Device and Digital Health

US Commercial Business Technology Solutions (BTS) group is engaged with a cross functional team of Medical, Regulatory, Market Access, Commercial and HEOR leads to explore design and develop of next generation digital health solutions. The solutions may include patient centric care model solutions, software as medical device solutions, Apps, next generation diagnostics solutions, combination & connected devices, data analytics solutions that can improve patient health while impacting clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes.

The role will involve working with Commercial patient experience and care model teams to identify the unmet needs of patients, across the patient journey, challenge the conventional wisdom and create innovative solutions. The role will be part of Commercial BTS, and will be vertically aligned with US Commercial Immunology and Oncology Commercial Brand organization to conceptualize, design and develop solution for existing brands as well as launch brands.


The role is expected to be a subject matter expert (SME) and areas of responsibilities will include

  • SME for the patient experience and care model Integrated Brand Teams (IBTs) on the overall medical device and connected health regulatory requirements such as Design Control, Device Regulations, FDA guidance
  • Leadership interaction across multiple functional organizations including Regulatory, Device QA, Medical affairs, Commercial, Research and Development, HEOR, Technology teams, Legal, Privacy, software compliance. Role will involve extensive collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Develop business case covering design specifications, user needs, technology architecture. Collaborate with commercial stakeholders to arrange project justification and approval. Represent problem statement and conceptual solution to external partners and internal stakeholders. Work with vendors and internal teams to develop prototypes and execute pilots
  • Ensure alignment with of work products with all relevant device quality, regulatory, GxP and Scientific (Medical/HEOR) requirements. Guide the prioritization, evaluation, and recommendation of new technologies and services to reduce technical risk ahead of formal development
  • Work with Device QA organization to establish SDLC , QA and software qualification requirements for medical device
  • Manage all aspects of life cycle management including Design and development of medical device grade software solutions, including, leading design verification and validation testing, risk assessments, providing oversight for solution development, and leading app development and platform integration. Role will require extensive collaboration with internal and external partners including external marketing agencies and digital health partners
  • Guide the identification and assessment of emerging technologies, and new technology partners
  • Working with Enterprise BTS organization, establish a Digital Health strategy for the enterprise by leveraging existing data and technology capabilities already in use across AbbVie
  • Develop comprehensive project estimates and timelines by soliciting input and collecting feedback from all impacted stakeholders. Work across IT and business functions to negotiate and secure the availability of resources to meet the demands of the Brand.
  • Ensure that systems are architected in a way that results in technology synergies and simplified integration to help manage multi-vendor relationships and Home Office Data Integrations.
  • Supervise a matrix team of Project Managers, Architects, Business Systems Analysts, and Programmers on multi-million dollar strategic initiatives
  • Act with urgency and passion. Help others be successful. Work with minimal oversight; deliverables and relationships are monitored through periodic reviews.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable AbbVie Policies and procedures.


  • Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. A BS/BEng in relevant engineering or scientific area of study is preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of work experience including business analysis, project management, portfolio management, and strategic planning. 2+ years of experience managing or coaching employees. A 2-5 year experience with Digital Health, or Combination device products, or Medical device products is preferred. Direct experience in eHealth or Connect Health environment and / or regulated validated system development is preferred
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to building trust, listen, and ask effective questions. Strong analysis and analytical skills. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to take complex or ambiguous ideas and synthesize into clear and concise action.
  • Innovative thinking and the ability to leverage past experience to be successful in an entrepreneurial environment. Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor matrix teams.
  • Interest in technology trends and application of technology to improve end user's experience. Proven track record of effective project leadership and positive results. Ability to self-manage time and priorities.
  • Working knowledge of IT pricing and contracting practices. Negotiation with IT suppliers, Digital Health vendors and Marketing Agencies.
  • Experience with digital product development, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS. Experience with appropriate global regulations and standards - ISO 60601, Design Control - CFR 820.30, ISO 62304, ISO13485, ISO 14971, etc.
  • Experience with the commercialization of medical devices, including combination products and connected drug delivery systems
