Group Director Early Stage Biomarker - Precision Medicine

Bristol-Myers Squibb is seeking a Group Director for Early Stage Biomakers to join its Precision Medicine organization that is actively conducting translational medicine research to further our understanding of cancer biology and to identify patient populations to derive benefit from Immuno-Oncology (I-O).

The Group Director Early Stage Biomarker will be responsible for developing and executing translational strategies for the early stage Oncology pipeline. This portfolio leader will work on various projects across all stages of drug development and will be a key interface within the Precision Medicine group.

  • Manages a group of 8-10 Clinical Biomarker Leaders for early asset development.
  • Proactively develops talent across the organization and leverages external network to connect others with hiring needs.
  • Creates opportunities for others within and outside of own team to develop new skills and experiences (both Biomarker related & otherwise).
  • Participates in the Biomarker & Diagnostic Leadership team to set the global biomarker and diagnostic strategy for BMS.
  • Builds and maintains networks within and outside of the organization to both strengthen their understanding of the big picture and leverage diverse perspectives, experiences and expertise to maximize performance.
  • Independently engages with development teams and technical/scientific experts to define, revise and progress biomarker plans.
  • Effectively engages with teams and governance bodies and utilizes advisory bodies to define, revise and progress biomarker plans
  • Proactively provides insight into novel ways to incorporate biomarkers into clinical designs to enable early understanding of emerging drug profiles.
  • Effectively interfaces with the Translational Medicine group to obtain appropriate resources to deliver on biomarker goals.
  • Collaborates and strategizes across the entire Oncology organization to improve efficiency and accelerate the early product pipeline forward.
  • As appropriate, provides biomarker expertise to progress validated biomarkers into development of pharmacodiagnostic tools.


This position reports to the Head of Oncology Biomarkers and is based in Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Qualifications:
  • MD or PhD, or equivalent advanced biology degree
  • Experienced scientist with 9+ years' experience in the drug development process.
  • Experienced manager of people and projects including demonstrated ability to grow new leaders and delegate key projects appropriately
  • Deep understanding of the role of translational research/medicine and clinical biomarkers in drug development
  • Excellent communication skills across all levels within an organization and external.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others through change by navigating ambiguity, creating the context, and engaging individuals.
  • Demonstrated experience in the appropriate application of various scientific technologies into translational research strategies
  • Working knowledge of all functional areas of drug development, including, biology, toxicology, clinical development, diagnostic development, etc.
  • Demonstrated scientific acumen and mechanistic understanding of disease biology
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where speed is paramount
  • Willing to work as a topic expert, outside of a traditional functional environment, in a team unified around serving the assets
  • Ability to recognize, articulate, and accept calculated risks to make informed decisions
  • Willingness and ability to effectively cooperate and partner with external providers and others within BMS
