Job Summary:

A Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, managing and installing.  They will perform start-up, commission and documentation of PLC/SCADA-based control systems for new capital projects while maintaining existing control systems for manufacturing processes.   The Controls Engineer will also support utilities and maintenance in a maximum state of reliability to ensure the manufacturing process is continuously in operation with minimal downtime.  Concurrently, through process improvements, the Controls Engineer will develop innovative solutions for power and controls platforms.  These include information networks, electrical safety and cyber security protocols, vision, automation and robotic systems, which deliver superior and highly efficient production systems.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Director on capital projects for facility remodeling and expansion
  • Perform activities associated with the design and qualification of the new and existing equipment used in a manufacturing plant
  • Manage control projects in a timely and cost effective manner
  • Design, install, commission PLC-based control systems and HMI interfaces for new projects
  • Prepare Scope of Work and bid documents for controls systems fabrication and installation. Manage various contractors simultaneously during lifetime of multiple projects
  • Maintain existing PLC-based systems such as Building Management Systems (BMS) in reliable condition, propose improvements, and train/support production and maintenance personnel
  • Maintain existing industrial databases such as MSSQL
  • Troubleshoot different controller software and hardware components
  • In the course of executing projects, follow the established Bachem procedures for pharmaceutical engineering documentation
  • Familiarity with various types of process instrumentation, valves, motors, and pumps
  • Work with electrical and P&ID drawings
  • Communicate operational status regularly to senior management and to corporate management, as required, at the appropriate level of detail. Communications will be both written documents, and in formal and informal oral presentations
  • Maintain a high level of compliance and efficiency to drive the organization to world-class manufacturing standards
  • Update drawings and P&ID to reflect changes to existing processes
  • Responsible for trouble shooting and providing corrective action directives, its specifications and appropriate capacities
  • Create, execute validation protocols and write validation summary reports
  • Draft of new procedures, SOP’s and protocols as well as training of staff for these expectations
  • Write summary reports to support the process development data
  • Write standard operations procedures, standard test procedures, master batch records and other related GMP documents
  • Maintain a safety first approach to process development and manufacturing

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Technology or Engineering Field with controls experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering within a pharmaceutical, medical, or food manufacturing operation
  • Experience working in a clean room environment
  • Specific knowledge of cGMP manufacturing methods and engineering principles
  • Experience with Equipment Qualification and Validation IQ/OQ/PQ, and reading/writing SOPs
  • Familiarity with good PLC/SCADA programming standards and practices
  • Training certification in the various PLC and HMI programming
  • Familiarity with local and national codes and standards including NEC, UL, IEEE, UL and NEMA
  • Knowledge of PLC, HMI, standard PC, Victual Machine and Server hardware components
  • Experience with Electrical circuits, including 3 phase 480V, 208V, 120V, and 24V DC power distribution
  • Ability to troubleshoot low voltage control and instrumentation circuits
  • Familiarity with industrial networking (DeviceNet, Profibus, Ethernet) and SCADA systems
  • Communicate clearly technical ideas and issues with various groups of interest
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to communicate in a proactive and solutions-focused manner, including keeping management aware of potential issues
  • Ability to work independently and manage one’s time
  • Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word and Excel (used daily)
  • Communicate effectively and ability to function well in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment
  • Detail oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment problems

Preferred:

  • In depth knowledge and familiarity with Allen-Bradley controllers and programming standards, familiarity with Siemens
  • Familiar with Ignition Software from Inductive Automation

Environmental Conditions:

Within the facility, the employee will experience normal office conditions with a well- lighted work area and minor noise from standard office equipment. Occasionally the employee will experience unpleasant odors from the manufacturing facility. On a daily basis, the employee will visit the manufacturing facility several times. Lab coat and goggles will be required for these visits. The employee will constantly experience laboratory hazards. Very occasionally, the employee will be called upon to address emergency situations.
