About the role:

Join bluebird bio's passionate and innovative Immunotherapy Research and Development team and contribute to the pre-clinical development of T cell based therapeutics. We apply our lentiviral vector and megaTAL gene editing platforms to primary human hematopoietic cells to generate novel cell therapy products. In this new role, the successful Associate Director will help define, refine and implement the vision and program expansion of novel cell immunotherapy products at bluebird bio. This candidate will be leading leaders in the organization that are driving product candidates through our pipeline. The role is ideally suited for an experienced scientific manager with a passion for and proven track record of exceptional talent development and organizational leadership. This position is a great opportunity to lead and evolve a team of talented scientists to make informed risk/benefit decisions about enhancing T cell activity and further enhancement of our lead products. In addition, candidates will be able to facilitate coordination of multidisciplinary teams through complex problem solving in a matrix environment.

The successful Associate Director will:
  • Develop and mentor a high-performance team of scientific and technical experts with a vision to engineer industry-leading vector designs and gene editing to enhance the function of our T cell therapies in hematological and solid tumor indications.
  • Identify new approaches and technologies to improve the therapeutic potential of our cell therapy products and drive the team to continue to innovate in this area
  • Plan strategically for long term success
  • Support the interface between other Research, Cell Process Development, CMC, Clinical, Regulatory, and Quality functions to align the product strategy with program, portfolio, and corporate goals

About you:
  • Have a passion for performing science that will directly improve the lives of cancer patients
  • PhD or MD in immunology with 7+ years of post doctoral experience
  • Must have at least 3-4 years experience managing teams and a commitment to supporting direct reports career development
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and implementation in a pre-clinical research environment and contribution to drug development process in the field of immunology/immunotherapy
  • Prior experience in the immunotherapy or gene therapy field is preferred
  • Must understand the biological structure and function of T cell receptors (TCR) and chimeric antigen receptors (CAR)
  • A keen ability to build an organization, interface with stakeholders, and help manage the dynamics of change within a rapidly growing company
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate others, influence, and negotiate conflict situations
  • Outstanding communication, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Highly collaborative team player who fosters open communication and facilitates mutual understanding and cooperation between all stakeholders
  • Ability to navigate and be successful in a fast-paced, highly-matrixed work environment
