Summary:
The role of Director, Scientific Solutions Architect is to broadly manage the overall strategy and day-to-day delivery of the scientific solution technical and data architecture functions across a set of business areas. This includes coordinating the efforts of the data, information and technical architects and scientists across multiple projects, developing internal scientific solutions data and architecture staff, and participation in project discussions and activities to ensure quality, accuracy, and consistency of scientific solution data and technical architecture deliverables and scientific solutions strategy.
This role is charged with managing the overall R&D IT scientific architecture and data management vision and strategy by maintaining a holistic, long term view of all data management, systems and technology leading to more informed choices and decisions. This includes keeping an up-to-date view of the plans for changes in each major component and monitoring the lifecycle of technologies in order to advise on the appropriate time to introduce new versions and replacements to ensure competitive advantage for Research & Development

Responsibilities:

• Manage a team of Data Architects, Scientists and Curators along with Scientific Solutions Architects who work to define and deliver appropriate technological data and technical solutions to enable scientific discovery

• Work with Business Relationship managers and project managers to adequately staff projects with scientific solution and data architecture resources

• Review deliverables from the Data and Scientific Solution Architects to ensure completeness, quality, consistency, accuracy, and adherence to scientific strategy

• Coordinate data and architecture staff activities across projects to maximize reuse and synergy between similar initiatives, as appropriate

• Develop data and architecture staff to improve scientific data management design, technical architecture design, scientific, functional and technical skills and knowledge

• Support R&D-IT Business Relationship Management and scientific leadership to identify gaps in existing data management and technical architecture and provide recommendations for ongoing and future process and technology improvements

• Define strategy, goals and objectives for the Architecture and Data team in alignment with the R&D IT multi-year roadmap, organization goals and objectives

• Accountable for all data and systems design and development to support the needs of Research & Development

• Lead data and technical project teams of internal and external third party resources performing design and development activities for R&D applications

• Manage a portfolio of projects and initiatives, monitor progress and course correct to meet the goals

• Demonstrate design and development thought leadership through execution excellence and mentoring individuals and teams

• Engage with executive leadership to demonstrate success and value and partner on strategy

• Contribute to innovation though pilots and prototypes that demonstrate value of new technologies to potential partners in R&D IT and R&D

• Responsible for directing data and technology team(s) through all software development lifecycle phases, and ensuring that teams understand and adhere to standards and apply technology design practices and patterns that lead to an in increasingly flexible, agile and easy to use and maintain environment

Requirements:

• Advanced degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or similar discipline

• 15+ years experience in engineering, building, and supporting a large heterogeneous portfolio of scientific enterprise applications

• Hands-on scientific application architecture experience leading, inspiring and designing large scale, high availability software solutions

• Strong background in scientific software systems, knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within laboratories and at least 10+ years of laboratory domain experience in drug discovery, clinical development or commercial manufacture process environment strongly preferred

• Ability to establish and reinforce good architecture, solution design and development concepts and advise/guide teams

• Prior work experience that demonstrates innovative application of data management, scientific architecture, effective analytical thinking, and attention to detail

• Collaborative, agile mindset to drive speedy, creative and efficient use of technology and data to drive business value across IT

• Experience managing a technology team in pharmaceutical research, life sciences or equivalent industries
