The Head of Medical Strategy and Operations will provide leadership in all aspects of strategy development and execution for the BMS global Medical organization in collaboration with the Head of Medical.

This role will be the strategic and operational partner to the Head of Medical. As such, it is critical that they are able to effectively and efficiently partner with/advise both their operating partner and other leaders in the organization to evaluate, assess, design, enhance and develop long and short term strategies (1-5 years). Those strategies will span both asset/portfolio strategies and operating strategies.

Extensive experience translating strategy to actionable projects and initiatives is also required of the successful candidate. He/she must be able to drive the successful delivery of project and/or portfolio objectives across business unit(s) by ensuring effective stakeholder management, alignment and business engagement, and provide guidance to staff and business leaders to improve project execution and remove barriers to successful execution.

Critical skills will include being able to bring structure to vaguely defined problems while utilizing pragmatic scope problem solving approach and execution management. Strong experience will also be required managing strategic initiatives to inform/shape long term operating model transformation.

The successful candidate will also coordinate planning, provide guidance to stakeholders regarding budget trends, P&L guidance, implications and identify concerns and solutions. As such it is critical that they have a demonstrated track record of have been able to develop and engage a matrix team in order to allocate resources with the right skills to projects/initiatives.

The leader in the role must be able to monitor and assess external trends to inform and educate stakeholders and stay abreast of macro trends in the healthcare environment, therapeutic area market and brand business drivers. A critical aspect of this role is the ability to work seamlessly across the BMS enterprise (both within and outside R&D), and coordinate the input of other stakeholders.

The incumbent must be able to mobilize, manage, and engage their organization, as well as the other key capabilities in R&D Strategy and Planning that support the R&D operation to work on cross functional initiatives.

  • Experience as part of or supporting a global Medical organization preferred but not required.
