Supervisor, Financial Planning & Analysis - Clinical Studies

General Position Summary/Purpose:

The FP&A Supervisor serves a critical role within the Financial Planning & Analysis group, in support of clinical study spend, including providing core financial support for clinical trials and clinical development programs. Reporting to the Associate Director of Finance, R&D, this role is responsible for forecasting, reporting and providing business analysis support to business partners. The individual will collaborate with functional department leads to design, implement, and execute core planning & analysis processes with an emphasis on business partnering and customer service. The FP&A Supervisor will act as the go-to person for respective trial and department owners on budget, actual, and financial reporting requirements, interacting with senior management across multiple functions, with heavy participation among a variety of cross-functional teams. Strong financial and business acumen in addition to broad knowledge of FP&A processes are essential to the success of this role.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, maintain, and own clinical study expense tracking, with robust attention to the drivers of clinical trials from a financial perspective.
  • Enhance and maintain effective business partnering to responsible business areas and Finance leadership to provide insights into key trends, drivers, and results and to ensure achievement of identified expense goals.
  • Serve as the cross functional finance lead for ad hoc GDO projects
  • Develop cost estimates and design analytics for new trial forecasting and assessing new compound trials.
  • Carry-out all budgeting, planning, and forecasting processes & timelines for identified business partners.
  • Independently manage the monthly close and actuals process for responsible business areas, including distribution of management reporting packages, Budget Variance Analysis (BVA), and maintenance of associated expense accruals as needed.
  • Provide analysis of actual clinical trial expense results vs budget, forecast, or other benchmarks, and provide appropriate recommendations to ensure achievement of stated expense goals.
  • Partner with Accounting and the Clinical Operations group to ensure clinical expense accruals and financial reporting are appropriately informed of business drivers.
  • Provide ad-hoc analyses and project support for business areas as required.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for savings and cost reductions.
  • Define appropriate performance metrics and provide regular guidance to business partners on achievement of financial goals and commitments.


  • BS degree in Finance or Accounting
  • MBA/CPA preferred
  • 4-7 years' experience in FP&A or similar function.
  • Ability to work autonomously and at a fast pace
  • Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Strong presentation and leadership skills and ability to influence others who don't' report to you
  • Strong collaborative style of working with business partners, accounting and other functional groups
  • Expert level of proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint and financial reporting tools
