bluebird bio is seeking a highly motivated Associate Director, Revenue Accounting, with experience in applying accepted accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely results and to ensure appropriate account control procedures. This position will be a key member of a cross-functional accounting team responsible for managing global revenue recognition, including: policy development, contract review and accounting assessment, business partnering, monthly and quarterly close, and global revenue process ownership. We are seeking an individual with a solid record of contributions leading to improved financial performance, effectiveness and enhanced internal controls.

About the role:

Policy development, global process ownership and control framework
  • Create global revenue policies and operating procedures that provide clarity, standardization and consistency across the company
  • Lead team participation in commercial launch readiness for product launches
  • Coordinate with order-to-cash team members to support customer creation, price master data maintenance, cash application and accounts receivable reserves
  • Lead team participation in pricing and reimbursement initiatives and implementation of reimbursement arrangements
  • Improve internal controls by preparing new and revising existing revenue process documentation, including: contract review templates, price listings, process narratives/flowcharts, and system requirements / implications.
  • Participate in long-term planning and implementation projects to ensure effective use of current and future technology.

Revenue contract review and accounting assessment
  • Review and assess new and amended revenue arrangements to ensure compliance with bluebird policies, being responsive and providing clear feedback as part of contract reviews
  • Clearly and concisely document accounting positions within well-supported and clear technical accounting memos
  • Ensure auditor agreement with company positions on revenue recognition

Business partnering
  • Work collaboratively across regions and across departments with Commercial, Supply Chain, Pricing & Reimbursement, Medical Affairs, Patient Operations, and others to develop a thorough understanding of the business model in order to appropriately apply accounting guidance and US GAAP interpretations as they relate to revenue recognition.
  • Support revenue forecasting process, liaising with FP&A and Tax/Treasury and assisting with the development of working model assumptions
  • Educate the business on revenue recognition standards and company policies and procedures

Monthly and quarterly close
  • Responsible for consolidated global revenue recognition and monthly close activities for existing collaboration revenue, royalty revenue and all future commercial sales
  • Create reports and analysis to provide timely and efficient reporting, and communicate key messages
  • Develop supporting analysis to all key accounting judgments and estimates
  • Review journal entries and reconciliations for deferred revenue and other net revenue adjustments
  • Prepare and update revenue policies and disclosures in the financial statements
  • Actively participate and drive implementation of new or improved analytical models, e.g. KPIs to monitor to allow for the monitoring and measurement of the revenue close process and evaluate the revenue accounting to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Oversee governmental price reporting and rebate reimbursements payment requests

About you:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in public or corporate accounting is required
  • CPA required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Pharma/biotech industry experience required
  • Excellent knowledge of ASC 606 and ASC 808 required
  • Experience with both US and international revenue recognition in past roles is preferred
  • Governmental price reporting experience is a strong plus
  • Experience with Oracle and participation in system implementations a plus
  • Intermediate level with Microsoft Office Products required
