As part of our growing EHS department, you will be a critical team member while we create and implement the EHS Management System for our sites in Cambridge, Seattle, and North Carolina. This role is based in Cambridge, supporting laboratory and office colleagues and will provide comprehensive EHS support to the Cambridge site, as well as EHS initiatives at other bluebird bio sites.

Specifically, this position will provide EHS technical support to site customers and ensure site EHS programs comply with bluebird bio's requirements and applicable external regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, EPA, etc.). Examples of EHS programs this position will be directly supporting include: Lab Safety, Biosafety, Emergency Response, Physical Safety, Environmental, Occupational Health, and other programs as assigned. This individual will be responsible for investigating incidents and for supporting ongoing risk reduction initiatives. This person will also provide EHS program support such as performing inspections, delivering training, facilitating safety team meetings, maintaining permits and licenses, etc.

About the Role:
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of the EHS Management system.
  • Implement and provide daily oversight of EHS programs and projects as assigned. Examples include: Chemical Hygiene, HazCom, Biosafety, LOTO, Electrical Safety, Emergency Response, Regulated Waste, Ergonomics, and Wastewater.
  • Ensure assigned programs are written, reviewed, and updated as required.
  • Provide EHS review / approval for chemicals, capital projects and site construction activities.
  • Participate in Risk Assessment evaluations to ensure the identification of high risks and associated risk reduction corrective actions.
  • Lead site incidents investigations to ensure robust corrective actions are identified and reduce risk.
  • Develop and implement new initiatives aimed at improving the EHS performance at the site and ensuring compliance with applicable external regulations.

About You:
  • BS in Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene or other related life science field
  • A minimum 5-8 years of related experience
  • Ability to travel 15% as needed
  • Involvement with professional associations desirable. (ABSA, AIHA, ASSE, etc.)
  • Familiar with concept of risk assessment and control strategies
  • Knowledge of relevant EHS regulations with the ability to apply their principles, theories and concepts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to understand target audience and influence across multiple functions
  • Emphasis on excellent customer service
