The Global Protein Sciences (GPS) Group is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join its Engineering and Expression Group at our AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA. GPS works collaboratively with drug discovery teams to advance the AbbVie Biologics pipeline. As an integral member of the group the candidate will be responsible for working with scientists in both GPS and Immunology/Oncology/Neurology in making significant contributions to innovate next generation biologics through interrogation of target(s) and underlying biology. The candidate will be a highly innovative scientist with experience in computational genomics and protein-engineering approaches to dissect protein structure-function interactions both in vitro and in vivo. Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary project team and use cellular and molecular biology tools to engineer proteins for in vitro and in vivo applications
  • Identify, design, and implement protein and cell based technologies to understand and validate therapeutically relevant target molecules
  • Hands-on bench work cloning and expression of complex multi-spanner proteins in an appropriate expression host as well as purification of recombinant protein
  • Extract information from protein and DNA sequence through sequence database searches, statistical analysis, and multiple sequence alignment
  • Demonstrate strong desire and initiative to understand immunology and help propose new ideas and techniques to innovate next generation biologic therapeutics
  • Keep up-to-date in current literature and apply new findings to project challenges
  • Contribute to research that leads to publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentation at external meetings
  • BS, MS or PhD in Molecular/Cell biology/Biochemistry/Biophysics or related field with 10-14+ (BS), 12+ (MS), or 6+ (PhD) years industry experience or combined post-doctoral training
  • Strong background in molecular biology including construct design and expression in different cell systems
  • Experience with diverse protein purification approaches for recombinant proteins
  • Working knowledge in cell engineering and cell based assays to elucidate molecular interactions at the protein level
  • Proficiency in the use of biological databases and on-line resources/tools.
  • Knowledge of programming and machine learning tools a plus
  • Strong track record of publications
  • Excellent communication skills
