Responsibilities

Are you looking to join a dynamic company striving to improve the lives of people across the world? The Diabetes and Complications group is looking for an energetic in vivo scientist to join their team. You will be directly involved in a variety of drug discovery projects for metabolic/endocrine diseases.  You will primarily be involved in in vivo compound testing in various rodent models of diabetes, obesity and cardio-metabolic disease.  We are looking for someone who is a task-oriented and self-motivated worker who is capable of conducting detailed research protocols with minimal supervision. You will design and perform experiments independently and within team-based environments, as well as interact with internal and external collaborators.
 
Key Objectives/Deliverables

  • Active involvement in diabetes drug hunting teams; Serve as a scientific and technical advisor to project team to develop, optimize and validate in vivo experiments and aid in understanding in vivo experimental results.
  • Perform acute and chronic in vivo studies (glucose and insulin tolerance tests, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp studies, etc.) including animal handling, blood and biopsy collection, measurement of body weight and food intake as well as test article formulation and administration by oral and parenteral routes.
  • Perform small animal surgical procedures including, but not limited to, rodent catheterization and mini pump implantation.
  • Analysis and interpretation of data in these experiments including presentation of data in spreadsheet and graphical form with descriptive statistical analysis.

Basic Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree with at least 1 year of relevant laboratory research experience. 
  • Background should include biology/animal science/veterinary technology or a closely related field 
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience in the handling of small laboratory animals including rodent metabolic disease models, with some knowledge of small animal surgery techniques.
  • Ability to work in flexible, team-oriented environment.
  • Flexible scheduling is a requirement. The position is full-time (40 hrs/wk), but not all regularly scheduled work hours will occur Mon-Fri from 8 AM-4:45 PM.  There is a requirement to work occasionally early and/or after-hours or on weekends.
  • Applicant should be able to arrange, modify and organize methods for in vivo studies and modify procedures when warranted.
  • Experience working with radioisotopes, chemical, and biological hazards.
  • Familiarity in the design and execution of the eu-, hypo- and hyper-glycemic clamp technique.
  • Additional experience in cell culture and molecular/biochemical techniques would be a plus.
  • Oral/written communication/listening skills in English are essential.
  • Strong relationship-building and interaction skills with peers and management
