The DuPont Industrial Bioscience’s Avon Plant Site is a small chemical plant in Martinez, CA. On site resources total <50 individuals in a combination of full time and contract roles. The plant is dedicated to the production of sulfuric acid catalyst (24/7 operation). The SHE-PSM Manager reports to the Avon Plant Manager and is a member of the site’s leadership team assisting in the overall development of the organization and driving strong accountability regarding core values (safety, health, environment, and respect for people) and creating a zero-overdue culture. Due to the small nature of the plant, the SHE Manager must balance both leadership and in-field problem solving and execution of the plant’s SHE programs and associated processes and systems. This individual is responsible for completing and filing all Corporate and Regulatory reports and permit applications accurately and on time. The SHE Manager will provide supervisory guidance to one non-exempt SHE technician (contract or full service) and will give functional guidance to all site personnel working on SHE related tasks. This position requires some early mornings and/or late evenings and occasional weekend work to support emergencies, non-routine work, and plant turnarounds.


Job Duties:

• Facilitate annual renewal of the site’s SHE/PSM improvement strategy and objectives. Translate strategy (vision) and requirements into tangible, actionable plans

• Site representative for interactions with Corporate, Business, and Regulatory agencies. Complete data management, analysis, recordkeeping, reporting, and permit application processes. Ensure timely and accurate reporting of any deviations or incidents

• Hands-on, in-plant work with operators, mechanics, contractors, and technical staff to accomplish work tasks. Complete routine (≈daily) field line walks (observe and engage) provide recognition, coaching, collaboration, and training

• Communicate with the Tesoro Refinery relative to shared topics

• Oversee and coordinate the site’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party audit programs

• Lead/facilitate site SHE and PSM committees

• Personally, lead one or more PSM elements or safety competencies

• Manage incident and corrective action tracking system (ETQ Reliance)

• Conduct and support incident investigations and root cause analysis (RCFA)

• Oversee ISO 14001 and waste management programs. Create new waste profiles and assist with waste handling strategy. Backup authorizer of waste manifests

• Develop and communicate SHE KPIs (leading/lagging) on plant dashboards and visual boards. Drive awareness and improvement through performance dialogue

• Use lean-waste elimination tools with teams in problem solving (kaizen) activities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the plant’s SHE programs

• Owner and developer for plant SHE procedures and policies

• Develop and facilitate training programs and monthly safety meetings

• Create “one-pagers” and communicate key learnings from events on and off site

• Participate in SHE/PSM networks

• Provide coaching at all levels of the organization

• Other duties and projects as assigned


Required Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related safety or environmental field

• Three or more years SHE leadership experience in a manufacturing environment

• Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM)

• Solid understanding of ISO14001

• Solid understanding of and/or ability to interpret Corporate, Business, and Regulatory requirements and ability to work collaboratively with subject matter experts

• Demonstrated SHE functional/technical expertise with strong knowledge of safe work practices, auditing, record keeping, investigation/RCFA, etc.

• Demonstrated knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and monitoring

• Demonstrated knowledge of waste management regulations and practices

• Six Sigma Greenbelt (or similar) and solid understanding of lean manufacturing and the eight wastes as they relate to both manufacturing and transactional processes

• Demonstrated strong data management and analytical skills

• Strong project management, organization, and prioritization skills

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Experience with organizational culture change/development

• Ability to train, coach, and mentor others

• Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively


Preferred Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Specific knowledge of California laws and regulations

• Experience implementing site wide programs

• Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP), USDOT Materials Transportation and/or RCRA Waste Management certification

• Lean/Six Sigma, Facilitation/Training of the Trainer, and/or instructional design
