REG is seeking a motivated and experienced Research Associate to join its Metabolic Engineering team. The purpose of this position is the design and construction of engineered microorganisms and the support for the development and validation of these engineered biocatalysts to generate industrial bio-products. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary, dynamic and enthusiastic team and must demonstrate a high degree of flexibility, creativity and initiative, and have a strong desire and ability to contribute as both a leader and team player within this high-energy and product focused team.



  • Engineer microbial genomes, construct plasmids
  • Construct and screen diversity libraries
  • Perform microbial fermentation experiments within microtiter plates, as well as shake flasks, and analyze strains using biological, biochemical and analytical methods, in medium and high throughput


Other frequent duties:

  • Interact with molecular biologists, synthetic biologists, microbiologists, enzymologists, fermentation specialists, analytical chemists and automation scientists
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, SOPs and quantitative analyses
  • Participate actively in project and functional teams
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the execution of standard operating procedures
  • Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature
  • Investigate, create and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement
  • Consistently and effectively communicate data, conclusions and recommendations
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Education Required: B.S. or M.S. degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline 

Experience Required: At least 5 years in a laboratory conducting research with engineered microbes

Skills Required:

  • Proficiency with state-of-the art molecular biology and synthetic biology techniques including genome engineering
  • Experience with cultivation and analysis of microorganisms such as E.coli or yeast
  • Familiarity with high-through-put and automation workflows and basic knowledge of statistics
  • Familiarity with molecular biology software for design and combinatorial assembly of biological parts
