The mission of the Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) directorate is to leverage leading-edge data science, informatics and information technology skills and capabilities to provide the world-class tools and services to accelerate translation of biomedical data to scientific discoveries, medical treatments, and diagnostic and prevention innovations for cancer and AIDS patients.

The BIDS Strategic and Data Science Initiatives Group has been established within the BIDS directorate to undertake key initiatives and establish new collaborations in computing and data science to address cancer challenges and accelerate cancer research. A key focus of this group is to provide a secure and robust data management environment for scientific data in accordance with FAIR data principles supporting an increasing level of analysis for the ever-expanding collection of scientific datasets.


Data Services Analyst

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and SME for users of enterprise data services
  • Provide guidance on data archival best practices, metadata definition and data hierarchy policies
  • Work closely with users to better leverage Data Services API from within scientific workflows
  • Identify and define new data service APIs, architectures and capabilities to help accelerate research efforts
  • Keep abreast of emerging trends and advances in data and metadata management
  • Provide support for on-boarding users including user account setup and configuration
  • Troubleshoot production issues
  • Perform verification and validation of feature releases and patch fixes



To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of six (6) years of experience, with 2 years in a client facing role
  • Experience with data management systems handling large datasets
  • Experience with object storage technologies e.g. Cleversafe, Amazon S3
  • Knowledge of data management/data transfer frameworks e.g. iRODS, Globus
  • Knowledge of scientific workflows
  • Familiarity with Linux
  • Familiarity with data interchange formats e.g. JSON, XML
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Experience with scientific datasets e.g. next-gen sequencing, imaging, etc
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies
  • Familiarity with test automation frameworks e.g. selenium
  • Experience using one or more programming languages such as Java or Python
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as GitHub or subversion
