Position Summary:

Nektar currently has an opening for a highly motivated intern within the chemistry group. The candidate will be part of a team that develops novel PEG reagents and utilize these reagents to synthesize conjugates with therapeutic potential. The candidate will be involved in synthesis, purification and characterization of novel compounds. It is expected that the candidate will be attentive to safe laboratory practices, use synthetic organic techniques, maintain a lab notebook that accurately records all of the gathered data and assist in the maintenance of lab equipment required to support lab operations. This internship is an excellent opportunity for an undergraduate or recent graduate to expand and deepen their skills, and gain an understanding of research and development related to the drug discovery.

Responsibilities:

Additional requirements:
• Strong knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry.
• Demonstration of good lab practices, with particular attention to safety
• Experience in the planning and execution of synthetic organic reactions
• Clear understanding of structural determination using NMR and mass spectral techniques as well as knowledge of related purification methods (flash column chromatography, HPLC, etc.)

Requirements:

Advanced studies (master's degree or beyond) and/or experience in the pharmaceutical industry is highly desired. At a minimum, applicants should have completed their sophomore year of college. Required course work includes at least 2 years or more of chemistry including general chemistry and advanced level courses (e.g., organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, etc.) with chemistry course laboratory experience. Advanced studies (master's degree or beyond) and/or experience in the pharmaceutical industry is a plus. Must have a demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles. Good oral and written communication skills are required. Good computer and documentation skills are essential. Must be well organized and willing to work as part of a team.

This is a paid internship opportunity, however, there is no relocation offered.
