Amgen is seeking a Sr. Packaging Engineer at either its Cambridge, MA or Thousand Oaks, CA location to join the Packaging Engineering (PE) Team.

The Packaging Engineering Group is responsible for the global package design, label creation, and new technology introduction relating to packaging and device assembly of Amgen products.

This position will lead the characterization of process optimization strategies and/or trouble shooting of packaging operational issues. Additionally, it will drive the recommendation and selection of primary and secondary packaging for both large and small molecule products in both clinical and commercial settings.

Key Responsibilities:

Franchise ownership: Manage one of Amgen's major molecules for PE for all product portfolios including Vial, Bottle, Pre Filled Syringe (PFS), Autoinjector (AI), and Electromechanical Devices.

New molecule leadership: Responsible to become a Device Technical Lead (DTL) for new vial presentations and platforms or the one person accountable to the DTL for PE.

Industry Expert: Utilize knowledge on pharmaceutical packaging and assembly equipment, process, and material interfaces to help drive platform improvements.

Process Improvements: Continue work on process and systems improvement as well as become the link between the artwork design teams, Regional Operations Leads (ROLs), and supply chain.

Lead or support a team in technology transfer from clinical to commercial operations for package design and assure appropriate line trials and validation are conducted prior to introduction and resolve any related issues at the sites.

Provide solutions to a variety of highly complex technical problems of varying scope, independently evaluate, select, and/or modify standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.

Perform assignments that have loosely defined objectives that require investigation of a large number of variables and interpret and execute policies and procedures.

Ensuring all appropriate internal and external procedures are met.

20% Domestic and International travel

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree


Master's degree and 3 years of Engineering experience


Bachelor's degree and 5 years of Engineering experience


Associate's degree and 10 years of Engineering experience


High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Engineering, Science or related technological field

6 years of package engineering or packaging equipment work experience

3 years within pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device areas

Independent thinker with demonstrated skills working in teams or leading project teams

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong team oriented skills, self-driven with ability to drive projects requiring cross-functional collaboration

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to multi-task and manage timelines
