Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Electrical Engineer, are to:

  • Be responsible for the design and implementation phases of electrical infrastructure capital investment projects, including concept development, estimating, basic engineering, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction. Electrical infrastructure voltages range from 480V to 13.2KV, medium voltage is considered 600V to 13.2KV at this facility;
  • Understand, follow and participate in the upkeep of Bayer electrical norms, practices, standards, guidelines, and procedures staying current with industry standards, technology and improved safety methods;
  • Collaborate with Plant Managers/Cost center heads, as well as other engineering and project disciplines, creating a common understanding and generating support for electrical distribution and infrastructure projects within the Kansas City facility;
  • Work with area plant PCT team for startup of new or modified electrical infrastructure equipment;
  • Ensure electrical safety and compliance with NFPA70e along with the Health and Safety group;
  • Maintain site technical documentation: Arc Flash study, One-Line diagrams, Load Studies, etc.;
  • Evaluate and provide electrical engineering and/or project management services with respect to electrical infrastructure ensuring the achievement of project and operational objectives. This includes safety, technical correctness, budget, constructability; schedule, maintainability, and operability.
  • Develop, review and approve electrical specifications, drawings and other documentation, as well as assist in compiling or create construction packages;
  • Provide direction and support to electrical designers for CAD drafting, electrical code guidelines and proper electrical installation;
  • Provide field support, and participate in check-out, commissioning and start-up as needed, particular support required for PCT medium voltage maintenance personnel on distribution projects;
  • Provide direction to field engineers for performing switchgear, motor control center, utility and rental equipment maintenance or installation;
  • Interface with other area engineering disciplines/departments, customers and vendors/suppliers, 3rd party contractors and other skilled trade groups to ensure scope of work development and execution of projects are correct and agreeable to all parties;
  • Interface with KCP&L (power provider) for system load changes, power outages, demand changes and infrastructure modifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with at least 6 years' of experience, or M.S. with at least 4 years' experience, or PhD with at least 2 years' experience;
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field;
  • Working knowledge of National Electrical Code (NFPA 70 and 70E);
  • Systematic approach to problem definition and solution development;
  • Ability to work as a member of a cross-functional team and to lead or take part in multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable working with people of varying levels of management, engineering and design with a strong focus on internal customers (e.g. engineering, maintenance, operations) and suppliers of electrical material and services;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with DC/AC voltage up to 13.2kV;
  • Experience in a chemical or pharmaceutical facility.
