Principal Scientist, Translational Research

Pionyr Immuntherapeutics based in San Francisco, California is developing cancer immunotherapies that target the tumor microenvironment to enhance the body’s antitumor immunity. We are seeking a highly motivated translational scientist to play a key role in the discovery and development of our novel therapeutics.  This key research position provides a talented scientist a tremendous opportunity to lead our translational oncology efforts and collaborate with experienced project team leaders in progressing therapeutic candidates from early discovery to IND-enabling studies. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding scientist with a strong background in translational biology, including assay and biomarker development, preferably in the area of immuno-oncology.    

Key Responsibilities:

·       Lead Pionyr’s Translational Sciences efforts, including preclinical and clinical assay development

·       Set the scientific strategy for the biomarker evaluation of lead programs, and ensure efficient execution of assay development, validation, and technology transfer to CROs

·       Manage Pionyr’s external collaborations, including CROs, academic collaborators, scientific and clinical advisors 

·       Work with preclinical program leaders to design experiments to elucidate resistance mechanisms

·       Coordinate and help author the translational research and bioanalytical assay portions of key clinical and regulatory documents

·       Function as an internal expert in oncology biomarkers and assay development  

·       Effectively manage associates involved in assay and biomarker development

·       Implement novel bioanalytical platforms

·       Present and report data in internal and external meetings and publications


·       Ph.D. degree in Cancer Biology, Immunology, Pharmacology, or related field with at least 8 years of relevant experience in developing, implementing and leading translational medicine strategies

·       Demonstrated leadership in translational sciences with a strong scientific background in tumor immune-biology and bioanalytical assay development

·       Experience in analysis of large datasets and knowledge of biostatistics

·       Experience in the development and utilization of biomarkers, various technologies/platforms, including omics technologies, immunohistochemistry, and immunoassays

·       Effectively work in a cross-functional team environment, interacting with various levels within the organization, as well as with vendors, external partners, and KOLs

·       Excellent organizational and effective time management skills

·       Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

·       Demonstrated ability to effectively work on multiple programs in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
