Research Associate, Fermentation Development

Responsibility includes:

  • Characterize improved strains at 15L fermentation scale.
  • Develop and perform various analytical testing for fermentation samples.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot benchtop fermentors as needed.
  • Design, develop and optimize fermentation processes and SOPs for producing recombinant proteins from yeast and fungal strains at various scales.
  • Collaborate with microbiologists and biochemists for strain validation and characterization.
  • Play a key role in the design and execution of scale-up/scale-down fermentation experiments.
  • Provide technical documentation, analyzed data, reports, presentations and protocols.
  • Collaborate with customers on technology transfer, scale-up/scale-down between facilities. Provide troubleshooting and process optimization support for existing commercial processes.

Job Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in chemical/biochemical engineering or a related field with 3+ years of relevant industrial experience, or Bachelor’s degree with 4-5 years of relevant industrial experience.
  • Hands-on experience with different scales of fermentors and process modeling.
  • Expertise in applying various fermentation processes to ferment yeasts and fungi for recombinant protein production.
  • Expertise in writing and validating SOPs for fermentation related process.
  • Experience in protein characterization including SDS-PAGE, protein quantitation, enzyme activity assays is required.
  • Experience in enzyme engineering and/or strain development is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and perform experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach solutions by systematic troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Ability to think proactively, independently, critically and creatively.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication (oral and written) and multitasking skills.
  • Goal-oriented, organized individual with a strong desire to a fast-paced dynamic research and development environment.
