Associate Scientist, Protein Characterization

Allakos Inc. is a dynamic clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing first-in-class antibody-based therapeutics to treat allergic and inflammatory diseases.

The company is seeking to recruit an Associate Scientist, Protein Characterization to join our expanding team in the group of Analytical Development and Quality Control (ADQC). The scope of the position and requirements are described below.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will develop and improve protein characterization methods, which include, but are not limited to HPLC, CE and mass spectrometry.  The incumbent is expected to plan, execute, analyze and document the laboratory studies in-house and interact with CDMOs/CTLs for supporting clinical trial and product license application.

Primary Responsibilities:

·         Develop and optimize HPLC, CE, mass spectrometry and other protein characterization methods to support structural elucidation and physicochemical characterization of antibody products.

·         Plan and perform sample testing and studies in-house to increase the understanding of candidate molecules and support the process development activities with Upstream, Purification and Drug Product development functions.

·         Ensure the laboratory and analytical instruments are well maintained and troubleshoot potential issues.

·         Work with external CDMOs/CTLs to ensure sample testing and development studies are on track.

·         Support the method transfers and validation with CDMOs/CTLs as needed.

·         Prepare and review QC SOPs, protocols, and study reports as appropriate.

·         Contribute to the investigation and resolution of out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend (OOT) testing results as needed.

·         Perform data analysis and present results in team meetings.

Qualifications:

·         Degree (BS, MS) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related scientific field.

·         Preferred qualification for Associate Scientist is minimum 2 years of relevant industry experience for MS and 4 years for BS level candidates. Candidates with equivalent combination of academic achievements and industry experience will be considered.

·         Working experience in analytical methods such as HPLC (SEC-,RP-,IEX-,HIC-), capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS, icIEF), mass spectrometry, SDS-PAGE, glycan analysis, particle analysis, UV/Vis, FTIR and fluorescence spectrometry is required.

·         Experience in cGMP and QC practices including reference standard, control chart, stability, IOQ and validation is a plus. Working experience with CDMOs/CTLs is a plus.

·         Detail-oriented and capable of working independently in a fast-paced environment and on multiple tasks simultaneously.

·         Proficient in oral and written communication with coworkers.

·         Physical ability to lift up to 30lbs and work at the lab bench for extended periods of time.
