The role of Lead Scientific Solutions Architect is to broadly manage the overall strategy and day-to-day delivery of the scientific solution technical and data architecture functions across a set of business areas. This includes coordinating the efforts of the data, information and technical architects and scientists across multiple projects, developing internal scientific solutions data and architecture staff, and participation in project discussions and activities to ensure quality, accuracy, and consistency of scientific solution data and technical architecture deliverables and scientific solutions strategy.
This role is charged with managing the overall R&D IT scientific architecture and data management vision and strategy by maintaining a holistic, long term view of all data management, systems and technology leading to more informed choices and decisions. This includes keeping an up-to-date view of the plans for changes in each major component and monitoring the lifecycle of technologies in order to advise on the appropriate time to introduce new versions and replacements to ensure competitive advantage for Research & Development.
The Director Architecture and Data will provide design and development expertise across projects and manage more complex projects as the accountable lead through all phases. This role will contribute to the project plan and schedule and be accountable for delivering a solution that meets or exceeds R&D IT goals for business value.


• Manage a team of Data Architects, Scientists and Curators along with Scientific Solutions Architects who work to define and deliver appropriate technological data and technical solutions to enable scientific discovery
• Work with Business Relationship managers and project managers to adequately staff projects with scientific solution data and architecture resources
• Review deliverables from the Data and Scientific Solution Architects to ensure completeness, quality, consistency, accuracy, and adherence to scientific strategy
• Coordinate data and architecture staff activities across projects to maximize reuse and synergy between similar initiatives, as appropriate
• Develop data and architecture staff to improve scientific data management design, technical architecture design, scientific, functional and technical skills and knowledge

Business Technology Planning
• Support R&D-IT Business Relationship Managent and scientific leadership to identify gaps in existing data management and technical architecture and provide recommendations for ongoing and future process and technology improvements
• Define strategy, goals and objectives for the Architecture and Data team in alignment with the R&D IT multi-year roadmap, organization goals and objectives
• Accountable for all data and systems design and development to support the needs of Research & Development
• Lead data and technical project teams of internal and external third party resources performing design and development activities for R&D applications
• Manage a portfolio of projects and initiatives, monitor progress and course correct to meet the goals
• Bring the industry best practices to the organization
• Have a clear understanding and point of view on R&D and IT needs
• Build strong professional working relationships across all levels within the organization
• Engage with external partners and capitalize their strengths to achieve the R&D IT roadmap
• Understand the best-of-breed solutions and tools available in the market and bring the relevant ones to the organization; periodically report the return on such investments
• Define clear metrics mechanism to objectively measure and report success
• Demonstrate design and development thought leadership through execution excellence and mentoring individuals and teams
• Engage with executive leadership to demonstrate success and value and partner on strategy
• Contribute to innovation though pilots and prototypes that demonstrate value of new technologies to potential partners in R&D IT and R&D
• Work directly with senior IT leaders in an advisory role on data and technical strategies

Business Technology Execution
• Understanding the scientific needs and challenges across the business, define roadmaps and technology solutions that will support the business strategies and goals of the Research & Development teams
• Ensure IT programs and projects are aligned with the architecture and adhere to appropriate standards, to ensure all aspects of the technology landscape (e.g. applications, data, technology, etc.) work together effectively and that project and operational costs are minimized
• Responsible for directing data and technology team(s) through all software development lifecycle phases, and ensuring that teams understand and adhere to standards and apply technology design practices and patterns that lead to an in increasingly flexible, agile and easy to use and maintain environment
• Maintain a consistent focus on R&D IT goals and align activities and capabilities to meet the design and development goals
• Develop and evolve architectures and designs that will become the blueprint for the solutions being created
• Promote architecture disciplines through the development of effective standards and governance processes with the aim of maximizing the reuse of application systems and shared services, and reducing time and risks in project delivery
• Document and maintain current and future state architectures for solutions in the R&D IT portfolio
• Research and stay abreast of the latest industry techniques to define architectural principles and patterns at the enterprise level
• Support analysis and estimation for proposed projects in the pipeline
• Bridge between implementation efforts and internal Enterprise Architecture processes, taking responsibility for execution against the solution vision by both internal and external development teams
• Research technologies and approaches critical to the architecture of scientific technology solutions, and reviewing design patterns that might be useful to the architecture
• Develop and maintain strong expertise and knowledge of current and emerging technologies and products; evaluating and implementing new technologies, development frameworks, and languages
• Mentoring on approach and execution of solutions, coaching on technologies and establishing a team-wide comprehension of solution capabilities and direction
• Effectively communicate proposed architectures to both technical and scientific business leadership
• Influences business leaders and business process owners to maintain consistency with architecture roadmap for their area and overall IT architecture


• Prior work experience that demonstrates innovative application of data management, scientific architecture, effective analytical thinking, and attention to detail
• Collaborative, agile mindset to drive speedy, creative and efficient use of technology and data to drive business value across IT
• Ability to creatively and constructively challenge designs to ensure simpilicty and supportability
• Capable of translating and presenting data management and technical architecture concepts into practical business terms in both small and large group settings
• Ability to think analytically and to independently and proactively solve problems
• Ability to interpret relevant data and information
• Experience managing a technology team in pharmaceutical research, life sciences or equivalent industries

• Advanced degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or similar discipline
• 15+ years experience in engineering, building, and supporting a large heterogeneous portfolio of scientific enterprise applications
• Hands-on scientific application architecture experience leading, inspiring and designing large scale, high availability software solutions
• Strong background in scientific software systems, knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within laboratories and at least 10+ years of laboratory domain experience in drug discovery, clinical development or commercial manufacture process environment strongly preferred
• Ability to establish and reinforce good architecture, solution design and development concepts and advise/guide teams
• Experience working with outsourced service providers, and offshore delivery teams
• Ability to develop and mentor other technical colleagues
• Deep technology knowledge in every aspect of IT

• Pharmaceutical or biotech experience working in a laboratory or biological environment (for Research only)
• Strong project management, business analysis and development experience
