Chief, Biostatistics Research Branch

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an exceptional and motivated scientist to serve as the chief, Biostatistics Research Branch (BRB), Division of Clinical Research (DCR). The DCR facilitates NIAID national and international clinical research programs through a multi‐faceted approach that provides support services vital to the research infrastructure. Within DCR, the BRB serves as the authoritative resource for all biostatistical and quantitative needs of the Institute, including the design, review, data collection, and analysis of medical experiments and national and international clinical trials.

The chief, BRB provides expert guidance to the NIAID director, other NIAID scientific leaders, and staff on the development and application of biostatistical techniques to research, especially in the design and conduct of critical clinical studies, trials, analyses, and reporting tools for national and international biomedical research programs. Responsibilities span basic, clinical, regulatory, and translational research; involve development and implementation of complex statistical theories and concepts; and require expertise in multiple scientific disciplines. The position directly influences the scope of NIAID’s clinical research through study design and advice on critical variables and provides medically-relevant solutions to NIAID’s most complex research challenges.

The chief, BRB, has duties that include the following:

  • Leads a program in biostatistics research and analysis covering the full spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiological research across NIAID intramural and extramural divisions
  • Designs, oversees, and conducts cutting-edge research in biostatistics, clinical trial design, regulatory science, and mathematical biology, both independently and via collaboration with other leading NIH, trans-federal, and academic investigators
  • Designs and develops original research techniques and methodologies to address statistical problems in large, complex national and international biomedical research studies
  • Serves as a national authority on mathematical, biostatistical, and epidemiologic techniques applicable to infectious, allergic, and immunologic disease research and related studies
  • Serves as a senior scientific research collaborator and expert biostatistician on NIAID-sponsored clinical studies, to include advising researchers and clinicians throughout NIH and outside institutions on joint research endeavors
  • Directs a staff of federal employees, trainees, and contractors and manages a budget of approximately $4.4 million


The ideal candidate will possess expert knowledge of biostatistics and adaptive trial design in combination with broad and expert knowledge in the disciplines of infectious diseases, immunology, vaccinology, immunological imaging, mathematical biology, systems biology, and regulatory science. The position also requires expert knowledge of Data Safety Monitoring Board standards, conventions for multicenter Phase III clinical trials, and skill in scientific design, implementation, monitoring, and analysis of clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory studies. The successful candidate must demonstrate the expertise and ingenuity to develop new statistical methods to address emergent needs and to serve as a leader and resource for NIAID in statistical methodology. Expert skills in scientific design, implementation, monitoring, and analysis of clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory studies are also required.
